Yes Yes I know I shouldn't be asking opinions on oil burners and in an ideal world the title would read 'Golf R or BMW 135i' but lots of miles dictate that's the way it is.

Anyway I recently had a 318d GT but sold it as I don't need such a big car. In the 4 yrs I owned it I had no troubles with it at all and admit to liking the 8 speed auto box. I've narrowed my search down to a couple of 5 door hatchbacks and have my eye on two. Both 2015 models, Golf is mk7 with nav, heated seats, parking sensors, cruise, keyless start and all the other many features that come as standard. The BMW is LCI with a good spec of leather interior, heated seats, satnav, cruise, Harmon kardon, LED headlights, parking sensors front and rear. Both low mileage, Golf is 18k miles and BMW 28k. BMW is £700 cheaper.

I've looked at all the comparison videos on YouTube etc but there doesn't seem much between them either in performance or economy. My dilemma is go for something unfamiliar in the GTD or stick to what I know and get the 120d?

Has anyone had both to compare? Pros, cons or issues of either?

Given that you want an auto, definitely the BMW. The 'box in that is one of the best autos around. The one in the Golf is a DSG...

Go for the GTD, less common, cheaper to repair (that is if anything goes wrong), looks better, better options like ACC.

I have the gtd on lease for the last 2 years and it's a great car! Comfortable, got a nice torquey engine, good about of basic kit and has not put a foot wrong in 20k miles!

My wife had a GTD DSG, pretty good car if a bit boring. Its a diesel hatchback at the end of the day. Personally id go foth e 120d xdrive. the xdrive would be good in winter and probabaly make for a cheap to run pocket rocket style driving experiance

We’ve got a pre-LCI 120d Xdrive (manual) and it really is a great car, I’m actually surprised at god much I do like it.

It’s pretty decent on fuel (50mpg+ without too much drama) but great fun in Sport mode too.
They’re quite rare in Xdrive form too (only 114 on AT compared to 8608 RWD ones of all types!)

I never expected it but the Xdrive on my 330d was excellent and I was driving about in that bad snow we had at the end of Feb no problem at all! Even great on wet roads and pulling out into traffic etc with tons of traction. Car was near uncrashable!

I'd have to choose the BMW, if you are already used to the ZF8 then the DSG will be a disappointment unless you like jerky gearchanges and a box that does what it wants.

I would go for the A3.

What A3?
