SL and S Class attract a very different buyer to that though. S Cabs are lovely things to drive smile

Hard to believe over 30 years ago the last Merc to wear the 560 badge was on our roads and way ahead of its time!

-Driver and front passenger airbags
-Crumple zones
-Seat belt pretensioner system that tightened when it sensed an accident was imminent
-Seated 4 comfortably and weighed "only" 1750kg
Colleague of mine has a 560SEC - an amazingly pretty car and drives really nicely when he took me out for a drive in it.

Agreed, I don’t think these sort of cars look good with the roof down, not like a Bentley or Aston would.

It’s the same with the new 8 series, the coupes look much better, the only thing I prefer about the S Coupe to the 8 series is that it’s pillarless. However they’re not comparable to the slightest.

What puts me off this car and Mercs in general is the use of the same engine across the range, the same 4.0 V8 from the C class, to the S class to the AMG GT, sort of ruins it for me IMO. I’ve seen a few videos of the S63 AMG + in action and it’s just another farty V8 which doesn’t suit the car. I’ll have the 65 please.

.......... and what about the dreary colours, endless silvers, tarmac greys & black? Pompous & serious as per the cars but something a little less Germanic & long-faced would suit the sportier models.

It's a lovely looking thing and that interior really is quite something.

As others have said, it is so close to an E Class cabriolet I think that would be a bug bear for me. I mean the S Class has always been an expensive, car with huge depreciation but I'd want my £115k car to really stand apart from the E Class.

Maybe on the road it has that bit more presence.

I think that's sort of the point - it's aimed at someone who wants the luxury and refinement of a Bentley or Aston without the attention.

If I clicked 'Uber Exec' and this turned up I would think nothing of it. Really lacks the premium look all the premium S class models did so well at.

Was thinking worse; sure it’s not a C Class!?

We’ve got a C Class cab in the house and from the outside, at least at first glance, this just looks like it’s a C Class with a mild facelift. I’d want a little more differentiation if I was looking at an S Class. Will probably look different in the flesh hopefully.

They certainly do IMO.

Nothing wrong with the simple / generic Merc lines in my view. Unlike the new 8 series it isn't a car crash. I hope the build quality is of historic Merc quality. It will depreciate but it will also last if that's the case.

My criticism is the interior flat screen instrument binnacle. To me looks cheap on the C class (occasional) Uber I travel in. The S extension of that concept is unworthy of a £60k car let alone a £120k car as this will be with options

Lovely car, almost understated elegance but its a great example of how to make a small fortune. Start with a large one and buy car and buy an expensive car or boat. £116 k car plus further 6k for the luxury package. Funny I thought id just spent £116 k on a luxury car. Yours for 75k in a year with the lux package and 40 k in 2 years.. Now your talking !

The wheels look too small and the steering wheel is ugly...I'm glad I've not got the money for one! biggrin

I bet its a lovely thing to drive and live with for sure. Understated luxury.

So "there really ain't no replacement for displacement" and we find this 560 more than keenly follows the whole it goes like a..... naming convention which Germans seem to love nowadays; all in the while packing near two thirds of what it's namesake did thirty odd years earlier. And what's with German designers obsession with monobrow faces on the backs of their fetid creations? Every car designed by some German seems to have a rear end design wanting to ape Maggie Simpsons arch nemesis. Stuff like this Merc and Kia/Hyundai SUV's carry the same scowl too...

May I ask when your "nowadays" starts? BMW, for example, have used this naming convention for many, many years. It's just more prominent with the use of turbocharging engines being more common. They made a 745i back in the 1970s which used a 3.3 litre engine....is that still "nowadays"?

I found myself staring at that image - even the later Gullydeckel wheels don't look too out of place.

I cannot look at images of the new one for very long.

I want this one much more than the 'new one' or any of the other newer mercs above.

I really like these - many on here say they're ugly, they depreciate, there are better options out there. I say, actually live with one; they're unbelievably pleasurable and comfortable as a daily proposition! I defy anyone to drive one and not come away feeling relaxed...
Exactly, I've been driving a new S Class for the past month and 3,000 miles or so. Very nice indeed. Size not really an issue either as my normal daily is a CLS, so only 1ft longer smile Air suspension, a calm drivetrain make for lovely journeys on todays congested roads. Maybe not the first choice for a Sunday blast but perfect for the M1. Waft is good most of the time. Having some horses hiding away for when needed is even better.
