Ooof that looks lovely in the red - rare colour. A handsome brute aren't they?!
Just 11 imola red ones left in Sweden, I've not seen another one yet, mines 1/22 of total production with the interior that is in it.

Very handsome cars they are.

I would love an e39, but it would need to be red please. And there aren't any for sale when I look.

The problem with the e39 is you can either buy a high mileage £6k risk...or you have to spend £40k on a low mileage one. There are hardly any in betweens.

That is a tall order, only 79 cars imola red and just 11 (9)royal/(2)chiaretto red ones of the DE92 (RHD Markets)

No one is buying any of these older ones as a daily now, so occasional use and occasion is king?

so I get the attractions of the E39. never driven one, but it sounds like a nice car.

Back in the real world, for those of us who don't own one and don't have the cash to invest at this late stage, how best to scratch the M5 ownership itch? F90 is unaffordable and will remain so for five years. E60 resembles a naughty blonde in a posh bar, as someone said earlier .. walk on by. But the F10s are so unpopular right now that prices are starting to get realistic. OK, so it's not as exciting and engaging as E39/E60, but 25k for a four year old 552hp fire-breathing beast is tempting - can it really be that bad?

I had my F10 for 3 years and it didn’t skip a beat, I still wouldn’t get one without a BMW warranty though just in case! Im not aware of any common problems although there is a thread on here with a blown engine which is ruinous. Epic cars just buy one from BMW and it will be trouble free.

And that is where the price is so different buy a F10 from BMW dealers and it’s not a £25k car period.

Its still a fat old thing though. Its amazing that the new car is just a passenger heavier.

True, even the old one is still quite a large car so it was never gonna be a light weight, the doors on the e39 feels properly bank vaulty tho whereas the doors on an F10 feels like they are made from papier mache.

The new car tips the scales at 2 tons tho, my e39 weighs 1720 kilos, poverty spec'd that it is so thats one rather chunky passenger wink

I was going off the weights quoted here. The newer car will be far safer in a crash even if the doors feel less sturdy.

Care to expand on that? You can’t see the point in a fast saloon car or just M cars?

The only M5 I've been in was an E39 and I loved it - the burled wood interior with black leather was just gorgeous and makes modern cars with the matte painted plastics look cheap and crap in comparison. I do agree they are too quiet as standard, but on the inside at least the induction noise at high RPM was very pleasing. I remember it feeling super potent, load of torque from low revs and plenty of power up top with an impressively urgent throttle feel.

Of all of them, I think the E60 is my favourite, if for no other reason than the V10. I visited a client where the engineering manager had one and I had a bit look around it, I think they're the best looking M5 and who can say no to that engine. His car was SMG and he didn't mind it, I suppose the proof is in the driving but for an autobahn tourer I can't say I'd be particularly bothered by a poor change in first and second or a slightly slow shift time, though I think I'd put up with an awful lot of minor niggles for the sake of that V10.

The F10 M5 will go down as a bit of a damp squib I think, people never seem to get excited by them. I certainly think they look a bit bland and they sound crap on the outside, way too quiet and subdued, almost like BMW were ashamed to shout about what the car was. They were certainly quick though, as I can attest from seeing one pull away at the end of some 50mph roadworks on the A1 and make everything else look like it was standing still.

Of the 3 cars, e39 is the one for me. Funnily enough when I was searching for M5, I couldn't pass the fact that it was a V8 under the bonnet (it didn't feel right not to have a straight 6)so I went for an e34. For nothing in the world I would exchange my e34 for an e39 but I wouldn't mind trying to find a good example like the ones above.
