BMW 325ti Compact: Spotted

Once the ugly duckling of the 3 Series range, the Compact is actually a hidden gem

We're always taught to never judge a book by its cover. But humans are shallow when it comes to choosing cars: if it looks aesthetically challenged, we grimace and recoil in a swift manner. Trouble is, by doing that, we often miss out on some great cars. The Fiat Multipla may have looks only a mother could love, but the clever idea of fitting six full-size seats across just two rows was genius. If it had caught on, we probably wouldn't be seeing so many SUVs on our streets.

BMW had the brainwave in the 1990s that it needed to attract younger buyers into the fold, but found it had one big problem that prevented the yoof from buying Bavarian: the price. Obviously, they couldn't reduce how much a base 3 Series cost at risk of devaluing the brand. However, it could produce a smaller car instead, which is where the 3 Series Compact came in.

It was an idea that worked. BMW found that many compact buyers returned to purchase bigger and, therefore, more models next time around. It was such a good idea that Mercedes tried it as well when the W203 came out and created the Sports Coupe.

On paper, the new E46 Compact was off to a good start. Unlike the regular 3 Series, the compact had sharper steering and many came fitted with sports suspension. This, combined with the reduction in weight thanks to its smaller size, meant that the compact was the nicest 3 Series to drive. You could still fit two adults in the back because the roofline wasn't significantly reduced, and the hatchback body style meant practicality was better too. There was even a handy cubby in the parcel shelf to stop your shopping flying about.

And fly about it would do, particularly if you ordered it with the largest 2.5-litre, 192hp straight-six engine. 0-62mph was dealt with in 7.1 seconds which was as good as most contemporary hot-hatches, but the BMW had an ace up its sleeve in being rear wheel-drive - so wet roundabouts were always an opportunity for a spot of mischief.

The only issue was that it certainly wasn't an oil painting on the outside. Plus, you couldn't get it with five-doors, so it was never going to be able to challenge the Volkswagen Golf or Mercedes A-Class for premium hatch sales. This is probably why the compact was never replaced and we got the equally aesthetically challenged 1 Series in 2004.

But, forget about that for the time being and concentrate on the facts. You can find a tidy 325ti compact like this Spotted for well under £2k. Many have hung their hat on cheap 330i E46s for drifting thrills, but saloon and touring E46s don't have the greatest resilience to rust, whereas the compact, on the other hand, seems to be holding up much better with age - another point in its favour.

This one is in Wales and is probably being sold out of frustration because the police have recently stepped up their 'surveillance' on the evo triangle. It deserves to go to a good home on some great roads So, get in there quick before the world wakes up to the idea of the 3 Series Compact.

Had a couple of these alongside various M3’s and they still held their own.

Fantastic little cars these.
I surprised quite a few on track as most people simply didn’t know they made a quick version.

Like these, IIRC there was a short run (02 plate?) of a slightly higher BHP version (195?). I fancied one a couple of years ago, and looked around for a bit, just couldn't find a good one, patchy service history or rough, although oddly don't recall seeing much or any rust.

I gave up the notion of having one, which in hindsight I'm fine with, as I've always had a problem with front lights. Similar to the GTV, they've always appeared beady and mole-like. I wouldn't normally countenance modding car lights, think i'd make an exception with the compact front end though.

Always liked these, kinda a left-field hot-hatch, always liked the E36 323Ti but wasn’t available in the UK iirc.

What a deeply weird link to make.

Yeah, thats a very good point, when this was new it was 27 grand and XR3i's were worth cock all, whether a car is any good or more valued than something else is nothing to do with whether, relatively one is better than the other. I would rather have this.

I like these. It would have to an auto for me. I was actively searching for one a few years ago but never found 'the one' and bought something else.

I used to own one and it was a good drive. The engine note was lovely and it pulled well (as standard mine made 208bhp at the flywheel at Surrey rolling road). The interior was a nice place to be with black leather and climate, and once I’d upgraded the suspension to Bilstein b14 it handled brilliantly. Best thing was no one knew what it was so it surprised a lot on the road. I never quite gelled with how it looked but I grew to accept it.

The cut in half budget poor persons 3 Series that ever was. It still screams "I couldn't afford a proper 3 Series".

Fancy these, very keen on its quirky shape and fabulous 6 cylinder engine.

They look seriously good with a lowering kit and some nice wheels

Though as said by more than one owner already in the thread in the BMW forum, they handle best on typical Uk roads on the smaller 16s
The engines are usually pretty healthy as said above, cheap GT86 alternative if you have larger kids to ferry about

I had one of these and loved it to bits but it was a definite grower. The styling was always the biggest gripe with me and I avoided parking next to an E46 coupe as it’s front end made the compact look like Penfold from Danger Mouse in comparison.

Underneath though it was a great drivers car and truth be told I grew to love it’s quirky looks. There have never been a great deal of RWD sporting hatches . Shame really.

Indeed. To even think that, let alone write it and then publish it seems very odd. Someone needs their head looking at.

Anyway, it's sold.

A link to the forums 325ti Appreciation Thread...

The non sport body kitted version is even uglier according to some, but from certain angles I think mine looks great...

Did these have the same rear suspension as other E46's?

No that was on the E36 Compact. The E46 Compact had the same multilink rear as all other E46 variants, but with a bit more spring rate all round, hence the Compact being the sportiest drive in the range.
