That time has finally arrived...

Apparently house prices have risen steadily for a while on the Welsh side in areas close to the bridges as people could get more for their money and commute into Bristol for no extra outlay on the toll, I have to wonder though how long it will be before we see speed cameras to recoup the lost income from the tolls wink

I read the other day that the speed cameras and 50mph signs were already going up. Dunno how true that is.

They were always hot with scamera vans on the bridge just before the tolls anyway!

I've crossed both bridges hundreds of times and never noticed any cameras. Plenty on the Avonmouth bridge years ago, but none on the Severn crossings.

I've only paid to cross a few times, motorcycles were simply waved through at the booth. I used to filter the queue to do this. I once got blocked by a tt trying to prevent me passing him on the M4 bridge, the booth operator gave him a real bking for that.

My next door neighbour was an engineer on the old Severn bridge, apparently the roadway plates are half an inch thick, which is all I can think about when I go over it now.

50 cameras have been up for the last couple of weeks but this is mainly until the works to remove the tolls are complete.

It would have been better if they had kept a nominal charge of £1 or something... the government didn’t actually commission any studies into the impact of the toll removal until after they announced it was being removed entirely...

The tolls were always planned to be stopped, why should the government commission a study? It sounds like you see this as a bad thing, how come?

Commuting from miles into Bristol is a mug’s game. Commuting from NO miles into Bristol is a mug’s game.

The only beneficiaries here are scum bag estate agents trying to convince youngsters that a 200k hovel in the mountains and a 1.45hr each way commute (on a good day, and no one on that part of the M4 can remember a good day) is somehow a better quality of life than living close to where you work.

Don’t understand or don’t agree?

It seems quite clear what the chap is saying. I know nothing about the road conditions there or if the properties in Wales are indeed hovels in the mountains at £200k but he is saying he doesn’t think quality of life is improved by affordable property ownership if it then means a long commute.

I work from home and can work anywhere. I’m constantly on at the mrs that we should sell up in the south east and go to Wales for a better quality of life. She isn’t having it because it’s too far from everything apparently.

Im going to miss it, swipe card, raise revs, barrier goes up and full throttle start driving

Now its going to be just like all UK motorways, over congested and full of slow traffic.

When they decided to make it free, did they consider the extra traffic that will start using it now?

I don't think prices in the valleys are going up! It's more realistic Bristol commute towns like Chepstow and the environs. Possibly Newport.

What I fear is the tunnels are bad enough as it is, all the tool removal will do is increase the queues at the tunnels.

The money saving is very welcome though.

Yes prices around Chepstow are already rising, as are the new builds around the outskirts of new port on the old steel works, I’ve recently bought a house for £160k in Bridgend which is 30 mins into Cardiff, the same house in Newport, again 30 mins into Cardiff is £45k more.

I do commute over the bridge weekly but luckily the tolls where always a work expense and I get paid travel time door to door so at least I was getting overtime to sit in the traffic.

It doesn’t matter about the tolls going and the impact on the traffic, after 4pm you’ll still be stationary while you wait to go though the tunnels in the 40mph zone

It won’t be getting better any time soon when they scrap the releif road either

It was Chepstow and around that area I was talking about as it's approx 30-45min commute into Bristol, as everything though, unless you managed to get in early to buy I reckon prices will be close to those in Bristol.

It opens up many opportunities for people living in South Wales, I grew up in Chepstow and now live in somerset because pay over here is generally better. I work in a village on the outskirts of bristol and wouldn’t work in the centre no matter what you paid me or how cheap the house I live in is - but if someone from Newport can now commute to Gloucester, Swindon or somewhere like that and save them over a grand a year it’s got to be a good thing.

I live in Chepstow and the house prices around here for the last year have steadily risen, the girlfriends d a d has a lot of property in Chepstow also and is very happy with the nice increases in value.

They do currently have average speed cameras up on the old M48 Severn Bridge but I think they're there to slow people down whilst work is happening more than anything, either way I'll be happy when it for go.

I don't see any problem with speed cameras to be honest, as long as you're sensible. The amount of time I go past the speed camera on the M4 that's between the m5 junction and the m32 junction go off on the other side is unreal, even though its clearly marked theres speed cameras and you can see the huge yellow thing on the side of the road, people are just daft and don't pay enough attention.

I think the tolls going will be great for the local economy. I used to live in Chepstow and the toll acts as a psychological barrier for people when it comes to popping over for shopping or entertainment. It's also a real disincentive to trades as vans are charged double, which does eat into your day rate if you're crossing every day for a job.

On the flip side, I fear the extra congestion this will lead to. I commute into Bristol on a motorbike (from near the FoD) so I'm not paying the toll regularly anyway, but do still suffer from the terrible traffic. I don't know why anyone subjects themselves to regular commuting by car around Bristol, it's unbearably slow. At least I can filter on the bike, but heavy traffic still slows me down a fair bit.
