Autocar put their long termer 2.0 litre one up against the hot hatch elite on the Handling course back in 2003.

Did OK for a boggo saloon on the circuit
Finished mid-order

Not really that impressive, if you consider what rubbish it actually managed to beat...

Hard to justify that money for a Mondeo when you can get smarter Saab's for a third of the price.

I'd have this over some godawful E46. Mondeos have issues for sure - rusty brake pipes is a biggie - but they're nothing like as rot prone as the E46 with its exploding cooling system and chocolate window regulators.

I wouldn't want a four cylinder Mondeo though. I'll suffer 25 mpg and have the proper one.

I bet £800 in readies might take this. What a chariot!
The E46 is a much nicer place to be in, as long as you get an M Sport, but for anything other than a 330d or 330i with a manual, the Mondeo is simply the better buy
My E46 M sport 320cd coupe has 160k on the clock, everything works perfectly, it goes much better than it should for 148bhp and I get well over 50mpg. It's not even got any rot on it either. It's much more comfortable than my 17 plate 220d GT, faster, more frugal and far better to drive. Whilst it is very subjective, for looks and driving pleasure I think the E46 represents a hell of a lot of car for the money. I'm not foolish enough to deride how the Mondeo drives because I know they can be good but, well, just look at them. They're just an old outside lane rep mobile for me. Sorry.
I'd choose a Mondeo over an SE 320d anyday, because to me, an SE 320d is just an old rep mobile too. M Sport however is a different car, it sounds daft but the bodykit and interior change the car. I wouldn't even really compare a Mondeo to an M Sport E46, different cars for different buyers, whereas I think a low spec small engined E46 saloon is bought by the same kind of person, and for the money, a Mondeo will be tidier, more reliable and probably nicer to drive day to day.

I think its's quite impressive when you think that it only has about 135bhp and is a bigger car than most. The Leon Cupra is a smaller, lighter hatchback with 180bhp for example and the proton with similar power, "handling by lotus" and weighs hundreds of kilos less did worse.

The words V6 and Frugal aren't usually seen anywhere near each other, but these and the 2.5s are good for 40-45 mpg on a steady motorway-speed cruise. 25-28 on an urban run though. Give it Some on hills and twisties, and you'll see single digits if you are doing It Right. Keep below 3500 rpm and the engine should be pretty much silent. Above it...

No turbo charger muffled nonsense! In family cars, second only to the Alfa Busso. Good luck finding one of those still on the road though.
