I had a 2004 diesel, and I enjoyed the car (when it was working) but the engine ruined it for me. It needed more power and a higher rev limit, and less fragile diesel-y bits. It's very heavy and eats bushes like it eats fuel (19mpg average at the moment). The torque and the noise make up for that in spades, though. Traction control is basic and it's not amazing off the line with no LSD, but once rolling it really flies. Very comfortable on the active suspension.
The different colour schemes, two tone etc, is a taste thing. Some are muted and some are quite garish. If it wasn't black on black I'd have tried to find a British Racing Green with Dove interior.
It will suffer from rust if not attended to, and there doesn't seem to be any particular age that this does or does not become a problem. Some are fine, some are imminent MOT failures. Cills and rear subframes most commonly, which I've had replaced with new metal and wax injected everywhere after I inspected them myself as a preventative measure.
A good one is worth this money but there are plenty available for less, particularly the pre-facelift ones which do, I think, look more dated.
I'll be sad to see it go but its days are numbered as I use it daily for work and the new emissions charge might sting too much.

A lot of power on offer, but I would never pay this sort of money for one.
I've seen them hovering around the £1800 - £2500 mark recently, and have been tempted.
In my eyes, they aren't a looker, even thought the facelift ones are better than the earlier models.
Would much rather have an X350 XJR or a Super V8, which can be had for much less.
For this money, I've even seen supercharged V8 XF models, which are a much better all-round car.

Definitely a super powertrain that will allow for some very quick motoring. But the styling of the S-Type is beyond questionable, I'm afraid.
Can somebody please shed some light on the responsible exterior designer? I find it hard to believe that Geoff Lawson (of XJ220, X308 and X100 fame) is responsible for that car.

However, 400bhp for less than £2k is a no-brainer. I know it will be a ropey example, but as long as it ran ok would be worth a punt. If I do get hold of one on the cheap, will update this thread accordingly.
Had one a few years ago, just before the change where warning lights on the dash meant an MOT failure. Can't remember which light, may have been handbrake, that never went out even though it worked perfectly. Two options were a new wiring harness or a new dash, neither guaranteed to solve the problem and that was with a Jag main dealer diagnosis. Ended up selling it on rather than throwing a grand at it. Still regret that.
Absolutely loved mine, was an early 4.2. Noise was lovely, was quick once going, handling was decent and I picked it up for £5.5k.
Sat behind a TVR at traffic lights one day I gave it a bit of a rev (very childish/chavey I know!) and could see him looking around totally confused where the other V8 was
Got stuck for three miles on a motorway behind two lorries "overtaking" both on their speed limiter side by side with an Aston Martin Vantage in front of me. Wasn't much in it when they pulled back in and we both accelerated.

If you buy a Car which is anything from 11 to 15 or so years old and it hasn't got a full service history and a reasonable mileage then I don't care how cheap it was I wouldn't touch it and I wouldn't expect it to perform or feel the same way as a well maintained vehicle at the end of the day you get what you pay for.
Looks wise I like it at the time it was a bit of a homage to the earlier S type and different than other cars were around I expect a bit like the XJS time will be kind to it.

It looks a lot better now than when it was launched. It is no longer a pastiche of a classic, it is now a modern classic, what the Germans would call a Youngtimer. I fell into convoy with one on the way up to Silverstone in a friend’s C63 Edition 507, which is a quick car, and the S Type R certainly kept up very well.

he has form of going to various threads and posting crap. They probably only ever saw Jeremy Clarkson's attempt at humour slagging off the grille but that's all he could slag off because its a good car only those who ever owned one know they were a decent drive
