More likely this is a new 1series saloon/gran coupe.
Based on the new fwd platform.
I thought the same thing... The 2 series range can be left for the (relatively) small RWD coupe style cars (M2, M240i etc.)Based on the new fwd platform.
Rename the 2 Series Active Tourer to 1 Series Active Tourer. The 1 range can then be the practical four door, fwd (mostly) cars.
But then that would be far too simple for BMW.
What's all this bubble about 4 doors being "cooler" than 2 doors? Who's mum and dad told them that?
Personally prefer the cleaner two door generally, but particularly on such a small car 4 looks a little cluttered and on a car with compromised rear seating anyway what's the point? Save the weight.

The BMW range is becoming quite mind boggling these days. They make a four-door, relatively compact saloon and call it the 3-Series. They then remove two of the doors, make it a bit sleeker and call it the 4-Series. Fine, but why do you then need to add two more doors to the two-door one and sell that? Isn't that just the 3-Series that you already made? It's much the same story with the 5-Series and 6-Series. Chucking out endless models with no real benefit. People seem to lap it up though. Makes the old "turd with a BMW badge on it" image seem all the more relevant. Despite that, I do see a bit of a niche developing for a four-door 1-Series (or 2-Series, whatever), as Audi and Merc have done similar with the A3 four-door and CLA. It seems that manufacturers can just keep chucking out ever more models and people will buy them. Seems a bit odd when we're supposed to be becoming more environmentally friendly of course, but the march of profit must continue, despite car companies trying to pretend they want to help.
Can't really see an M version of this appearing regardless, as we've not had an M4 Gran Coupe. I guess the model line-up doesn't fit quite so well in this instance though, as there's no four-door saloon 1-Series to make an M1. The drivetrain will dictate it though. If the 2GC is based on the new FWD/AWD 1-Series, it won't be a full-fat M-car. If it's based on a RWD/AWD platform, it might.
Ultimately though, for me, it will just be another BMW I'm not interested in. While they make some great cars, it's all becoming so diluted and hard to understand, that I struggle to get excited about them anymore.

Will people still buy an A3 over a Skoda, of course, a 1 series despite it being a FWD mini with a different shell, absolutely - Driving 'German' is an absolute necessity to many young people now.
You're absolutely right there. When I ditched my Golf R for a Megane RS, one guy I know was totally baffled. Despite the reasons I gave for the change (better looks, better steering feel, more interesting, nicer seats, more engaging), you could see his eyes blinking like he had some sort Captain Darling-type tick. His response was just relentlessly "I'd still have the Golf", despite the fact he couldn't give any real reason, other than the fact that VW = better.kambites said:
I'm sure the huge majority of buyers (2-series GC buyers, not M2GC buyers) couldn't care less what drivetrain/platform the car has. BMW are calling it a 2-series because they can sell it for more if it's called a 2-series.
This is what it comes down to ultimately. Most buyers don't give two hoots which way round the engine is or which wheels are driven. They just want it to have the right badge.Chestrockwell said:
I do see the point in the 4 series GC, I found the 3 series too ordinary and too common but I still wanted 4 doors so went for the 4 series GC.
I must be missing something, as the 4-Series GC is hardly out of the ordinary. I struggle to tell them apart at times to be honest.Jon_S_Rally said:

They used to but the 3 series ain't exactly compact anymore. The latest is bigger than the E39 5 series and bigger than the 7 from a couple a few generations back. It's fecking huge now...Davislove said:
