RE: Ford Fiesta ST: PH Fleet

I had one and the only way that would be even remotely possible, would be with a following wind, no passengers, and a steady foot keeping you at about 55mph. Even then, I doubt it. The V6 Duratec was good, but not that good. Average from mine was about 35mpg tops, even on decent runs.
ShrugWith the advent of 2019 has PH suddenly become the "accuse people of being a liar" forum?
I'm not talking about a business trip at 90 plus hanging around in traffic and then some shuffling around in town, just a steady 70-80 on the M1 / A1 from Thirsk late on a Sunday evening then a 30 mph short run in to home. The same car that does 26-28 around down, 18 (or single digits if you try hard enough) on the North Yorkshire twisties. I'm not claiming it is the efficiency miracle from Planet VeeSix. Every now and then when I borrow the car I get a chance to compare the trip computer with the forecourt pump, and its usually pretty darn close. It just is what it is.
If the author was claiming 53 mpg as a long term average, I'd be sceptical. But they weren't, were they?
They were claiming 53 mpg up a motorway, which I do believe, as my own car with double the capacity and double the cylinder count can get .
As I said before, modern turbocharged petrol engines under light load are remarkably fuel efficient. When driven hard, they burn fuel in line with expectations for their power output, but on a motorway, no 200 bhp car is working hard, and the Fiesta would have been running on two cylinders only for the bulk of it, given it was probably using no more than 25-30 bhp at a cruise. The car's load is irrelevant on a motorway, as weight makes very little difference to fuel economy when driving at a steady speed.

No - that's calculated as I said, not trip computer.
But this is so Pistonheads these days - arguing over a mundane MPG figure rather than how much fun something is to drive.
Would love to know from the OP whether the LED lights are worth the £600 option price and if he thought the Performance Pack LSD was an everyday bonus or just on track / on the edge?
I've traveled about 1200 miles in our ST. I would say that when pressing on on slippery roads yes the lsd is noticeable if you keep you foot on the gas steadily through the bend instead of lifting, especially as the bend tightens. (Caution taken of course)But this is so Pistonheads these days - arguing over a mundane MPG figure rather than how much fun something is to drive.

For the lights yes, I notice quite a difference in dusk, dark, and mist over the same roads I drove in the earlier model.
I’m averaging 36.3 according to the computer in mine. That’s a mix of 15 mile commutes through fairly heavy traffic and more enthusiastic driving at weekends, I leave it in ‘normal’ for the commute most of the time and get some use out of the stop start. I honestly expected it to be higher but I’m not complaining.

Thanks for the comments - just what I was wanting to hear. For the lights yes, I notice quite a difference in dusk, dark, and mist over the same roads I drove in the earlier model.
I do various dirty country roads on my commute - tractor mud strewn - so the lsd might be useful.
My mk7.5 Fiesta lights are ok with uprated bulbs, but not on a par with my MK3 focus RS. Hopefully the new ST will be just the job.
I regularly see 45+ mpg on my commute along the A14. Sit at 76 cruise control on and it sips petrol. The seats are a bit snug but as others have said, they are comfortable over a long trip and are starting to mould themselves to my lardy arse. If I go for a play however the petrol does drop considerably into the high 20s but as an all rounder I wouldn't change it for anything else in its price range

I’ve read this thread thinking surely it must be able to get near 50mpg or above so I completely believe you can do those figures. My M135i will do low 40’s on a run and they are somewhat different in terms of engine size and power. I’ve been in a few Fiestas and think they are impressive little cars!

I'd love a review/comparison between the "base spec" lights and the "top spec" lights that various manufacturers offer. It'd be properly beardy stuff but good lights are a godsend on an empty road at 1am...

Not a comparison but it is the LEDs in action.
I have a nearly 3 year old Ford focus 1.0 ecoboost 125. I regularly get low 40s around town and 50-55mpg on the motorway at 'normal' nsl speeds. Keeping it at 65mph will net high 50s. I have a one time best of 62mpg on a particularly clear straight 85mile run to Cambridge couple of months back. FYI, all calculated from the pump. Trip over reads by approx 1mpg
Car has 27k now, I would say it has got better since hitting 20k.
Great car, great little engine

Would love to know the roads you picked around Otley? I'm yet to find one that really excites!
The B6451 from Farnley to Summerbridge is a fantastic road. Starts just outside Otely at the entrance to Farnley Hall on Farnley Lane. Drive it early or late to avoid commuter traffic and you can often have the road to yourself. There's plenty variety from tight hairpins to fast sweepers and long straights, just watch for speed traps (mobile speed camera van) by Menwith Hill. It's a great road that'll test every part of a car!NST said:

Do these cars still have the engine issues? Car has 27k now, I would say it has got better since hitting 20k.

Seems like a great daily driver by all accounts. Lease deals on the ST seem too expensive, compared to other machinery out there
