I own a 4-month-old 190 Tiguan R line 4motion DSG.
Anybody that said its a boring drive / poor car. has never ever driven one, period.

Superb car and it was some pull too, and it can even go around a corner pretty damn good!

It's not aimed at the Q3 it's actually aimed against the Q5.

I hate the prospect of these hot SUVs, I really do. But your comment is just moronic. If bland people buy quick family cars then Richard Attwood was the dullest guy alive for having a 405 estate. If only we were all driving gods like st4.

I quite like the new X3 M40i too. There is certainly demand for small SUV’s with a bit of punch

Was wondering whether one of these might appear, sounds like it's probably quite a nice drive! The DSG 'box and Haldex 4WD usually work really well with the 2.0 TFSI. You can have a lot of fun with punchy launches away from the lights and endless amounts of grip.

Looks like Audi have done the same with the new Q3 as they've listed a '45 TFSI' variant with the same drivetrain and similarly quick 0-60 time

Definitely nicer than the 190PS diesel version and probably no more expensive either. I like thumbup

It might achieve a quick 0-60 time as a result of a part time 4x4 system but I doubt a car this heavy will be quick in the real world and to be honest why would anyone want a hatchback on stilts to be quick? Lol
If you live in a household that only needs / can afford one car and your Mrs wants one on stilts.
This x1,000,000.

I've luckily managed to stave off getting an SUV - convincing her that an estate is better. Because I can't stand SUVs. But getting an SUV is a 'when', not an 'if'. So having one that goes quick and doesn't cost upwards of £50k is all good in my books.
Luckily, not everyone is limited to one car. But for me a small SUV for road use is a much better family car than the equivalent estate, even my wife agrees. Don't care about image either.

Hmm, is this a news story? It's just a normal 4pot turbo motor isn't it? I mean, our Q5 has this same engine already (or a derivative). Nothing to do with being fast and furious, it's just a ~200hp ish motor for lugging along 1800kg.

As someone else said, this isn't new. At least 10 years ago there were Tiguan 2.0tsi 4motions with Golf GTI engines - it's just that no-one bought them because they had high tax bands and everyone was diesel obsessed!

Agreed my 7 series will do 0-60 in 5 seconds but that's not how it really performs in day to day driving, the low down torque/gearbox/launch control and awd all come together to provide a misleading 0-60 time.

People who say stuff like this, rarely have their own vehicles listed in their profile.

Funny that...

Pretty much this. We're a 2 car family with an XC90 for her and an M135i for me. If we needed to cut down to one car only, I'd be forced down the SUV route. I'd be looking at the X3 M40i or similar in that case. She wouldn't notice the performance as I don't think she's ever had a rev needle past 3k revs before.

These medium powerful 4x4s with autos are absolutely perfect for straight line hero Nigel to show people in lesser cars who is boss away from the lights, and I must admit I've been very entertained by how quick they are from a standing start. Pretty drab and boring for absolutely everything else though.

Anything that means other road users aren't dawdling and getting in the way all the time must be good though?

Sounds like a smart move from VW to me. Cars like the Tiguan are great for young families, and as diesel is now seen as the enemy an alternative powerful powerplant was needed.

I'd happily get one of these as a replacement family wagon as it would no doubt be far more practical than the 1 series I bought. I'd still keep my Clio 172 though for when I want to have fun behind the wheel though.

I'll always prefer an estate, but they wouldn't be making them if there wasn't a market. No matter what people say on here, they sell. Just like this will sell.

Have to say that I think the 2.0 BiTDi engine option is a much better match for a top-end 'compact SUV' type vehicle (though personally for a small 'rugged' vehicle I would rather have an estate than these toy SUVs, I like the look of the Golf Alltrack - too bad they only have the 170bhp diesel).

But I guess the hype against diesel is strong.

X3 3.0sd, our old old family car. 2006 X3 mapped to around 350bhp and 500 lb/ft, the ultimate sleeper. They're cheap now too. I remember it being brutally quick.

I had some fun with one when I had my E92 M3, and it took all my effort(and some complete daftness) for me to overtake it. I later went for a 640d...because I thought that if you can't beat them you might as well join them! biggrin

I typed 'Given up on life' into Altavista and a picture on a Tuguan came up.

Even with a GTI engine.
