The Supra used to compete with the GTR/NSX in terms of performance/desirability though and that is where my beef comes from. This new Supra is a cop out and half hearted effort from Toyota for me who have just used BMW as an easy entry to bring it back.
Either go big or go home IMO. The 1994 Supra used to punch well above its weight and I found that very appealing at the time, this new one isn't anything to really get excited about for me.
Do you know prices back in the day? Id have thought the NSX was always more money than the Supra. Toyota certainly sold a lot more Supra’s than Honda did NSX’s.Either go big or go home IMO. The Supra also seems far more aimed at the UK market, the GTR in R32, 33, 34 guises wasn’t even sold in N America. But the Supra was and has an engine setup that almost mimicked large displacement V8 power delivery, with lots of low end grunt.
I think the rose tinted specs are skewing your perception of the past models.
No rose tints from me and the fact is that the Supra was a big hitter back then, hence why my expectations of the new one were very high. I'm not saying the new one will be a sack of st but it won't be what it once was for me.
Toyota have made a return to sports cars based on fun/handling over brute power/speed.
It is sort of counter to the old days of turbo of super chargers. They are still a bit nuts at times, the Auris with the 3.5l v6 that's used in some Lexus and lotus cars, but the new ethos seems to be more focused on the dynamics.
Perhaps with 2wd the high 300's is 'real world' the best street power, it certainly isn't slow?
Be interesting to get the journalist reviews on all the models, the low powered ones may be just as important for Toyota as the top straight 6 ones.

Some of you may be interested in this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ516sXSj7w New Supra already gutted and being prepped for D1, hopefully more updates to follow progress.

Doug DeMuro's video is pretty good on this. It does sound really good - but then I imagine identical to the Z4 M40i?!
Strange little details about the missing under-bonnet bracing and reinforced mounting points for a spoiler. I genuinely believe they (Toyota) will release a hotter version not far down the road. Was it the SZ or RZ which was the "one to have" in Gran Turismo 3?!!

I'm looking forward to watching a few reviews of this now. I watched Mat Watson's review on the old Supra on carwow last night and really enjoyed that. It will be good to see what everyone says about the new one.

Just for you New Mat Watson Supra video0-60 in 4 sec before anyone has done anything to it is pretty impressive, considering people were saying its slow compared to a GTR, the original was 0.8 seconds quicker at 3.2 to sixty and 9 tenths over a quarter mile at 11.6 vs 12.5, quicker for sure but not as much as I expected.

Enjoyed that thanks, he is very engaging as a reviewer and the car looks pretty good, maybe a little bit overstyled but I wouldnt say no.

I've just watched that and he has mirrored my exact thoughts about what I said earlier in this thread. It is sacrilege that it doesn't come with a three pedal manual, and it also used to compete with the old Skyline GTR. Whereas now it is nowhere near it and I find that a shame. I can forgive the lack of performance in some respects because the Supra is a different kettle of fish to the GTR now. Yet I do think that Toyota have missed a trick by not offering a manual because they've not gone for outright performance with it.
