Thinking about a 60PS Up as family pool car, had wondered if it would struggle out of town so thanks for contributing
I’e had one for 3 years. Performance isn’t an issue. It’s fun to drive, handles well, cruises easily at 80 , zero road tax and 55 to 60 mpg.

Quite rewarding to drive hardsmile

Not really a big fan of Volkswagen, but I'm finding it increasingly hard not to like the little GTI. A refreshing car that is fun to drive and cheap to buy, what's not to like?

We bought ours (60hp)when out son was born (he's 4 now) and we genuinely have no regrets. It's remarkably roomy and hard wearing inside and the boot is like a tardis. We've gone on holiday to Wales fully loaded up with buggy, travel cot and so on no bother.
And I got rid of a Skoda Fabia MK2 as I found it too small & frustrating (we filled it, including the back seats for one night away) within 2 months of my daughter being born, trading up to a Leon estate. I guess you must pack a lot lighter than we do.

i flit between a 60hp SEAT mii & a Porsche 981 Spyder .
the 60hp Mii is a really good little car. i paid 6650 for it brand new 3 years ago.

using good practice of planning ahead , in the right gear , use the momentum , and it's a cracking little car. 58mpg on the last tank , none of which was motorway.

sometimes drive at 10/10th and get it on the door handles!

and it also makes the Spyder a really special event when I pull the cover off.

I might order an up gti . i think it is a bargain.

Boxster Spyder & an Up GTI sounds like a good two car garage.
yep , just need to get it past my lovely wife!!

If she wants a bigger car - look at the Fabia Monte Carlo, the top spec one has the same engine & there's an estate option too. Sensible used ones are in the £10k region.

We have had an UP! with the basic 60hp engine for 5 years now as an office pool car. I also have the use of a Mini Cooper D Convertible or Mercedes C180 in the office. I always go for the UP! over the other 2. It is one of those cars that confirms that less really is more. Great fun to drive. A bit bouncy/lightweight on the motorway maybe, but still fun. Reliable too.

I know it's a silly point to make, but it does make you wonder about a remapped secondhand High-Up! as that sounds like it could be quite a good fun cheaper alternative to the GTI.

We have the MiL's old MINI Cooper as a second car. 3-door makes it a bit awkward for kicking youngest out at the kerb on the school run but it would be a more sensible thing for the rest of our short commute, leaving the big Disco Sport for the longer journeys and when we're all piling into it. I suppose replacing the MINI with a 5-door Up! could be the solution.

Having owned all sorts of Motors and all the usual suspects, I now drive this Up!

75bhp (not quite as nippy as a Pink C1 Airscape I had (82bhp) but perfect on a Motorway, 75mph all day long and very quiet for the size of car too. Very big inside for the dimensions.

Tech is good (High Up) with Cruise, AC, Pano roof, Dab, Voice Control, PDC, Nav etc.

Much better on Fuel than the 1.2 C1 I had (43mpg), this is (50mpg)

Ride is Firm though on the optional 17's and 40 profile tyres (sounds big but on a 195 width it isn't much)

I don't miss my ML that I sold for this... Big, Heavy, pointless for City living...never worth £58K, where the Up at £12K feels worth it

There was an article & thead about getting a normal TSI Up & chipping it on here sometime before Christmas.

I still think the Up GTI is worth the £600 extra - 6 speed gearbox for one. I don’t know how much the gap is second hand but voiding the warranty on the TSI doesn’t seem worth it.

Top tip: relocate her into a corner, then it'll easily fit...

Further confirmation that most cars in the high end of a given range would be better to drive with smaller, lighter wheels

In previous updates I've said that the Up GTI is unlikely to compel its owner to get up early on a weekend to head for a drive, and that still holds true now.
Interesting point this. A familiar story on the Up GTI owners forum is that of people with far more capable cars choosing the Up over them when going for a drive. Perhaps that’s the attraction of something new and shiny, however mine is certainly the first car I’ve had in a long time that has got me out the house just for the act of driving, often going for a blast around the nearby moorland roads. It’s a compelling car, perhaps because it isn’t perfect.

I do agree with the previous poster about the wheel size, but I’m torn because I love the look of the standard alloys. Upgrading the stock tyres is something I’ll be looking at doing in the near future, as the eco-biased EfficientGrip rubber is poor.
