Gloss or satin black alloys?

This thread is not doing me any good, recently bought a car with black wheels, but the only alternative for the model was diamond cut wheels which I've sworn off after two cars with them on. Black on black. Don't particularly think I'm a gangster being a mid 40s IT consultant, but I guess my kids might think I was a bit more street/dope/whatever if I was. (Ignore diesel Polo in reflection)
I quite like them, but I'm biased, last two cars diamond cut wheels have self destructed big style and put me off them completely. R-Sport is either diamond cut or black and in 25t petrol there's little choice. I refuse to have diamond cut wheels again, I keep my cars for long enough with enough miles (up to 80k) I see the good side when I buy them and the utterly crap side when salt/water gets under the lacquer. So gangsta it is!
I am bored with silver wheels, so I get the desire to go black (insert obvious pun), however it's a tricky colour. I think it can work on white cars and maybe red, or yellow but a silver car with black will just look too bland.
Also, as others have said, the wheels you have are very detailed which you'll lose if you paint them black. I have this same argument with my wife over her white Merc GLC. It has titanium-coloured wheels which I think are very tasteful but she wants them in black and despite what I said above about black wheels on white cars, in this case I really think the titanium is the winner.
Lastly, if you do go black, don't go for gloss. As others have said, you need to keep the tyres glossy for that to work. I'd have a Matt black or dark grey to match the tyres.
My fav would be a deep red car with gold alloys. I'd actually try that on an SUV if I had the chance to buy new but I doubt others would be as enthusiastic as me when I came to sell it.

Please don't go black, for the same reasons that others have mentioned.. a dark anthracite would look far better with that colour I think.
Although I'd be happy to leave them as-is, if they require a refurb and diamond cutting is too much of a faff then definitely go with a dark anthracite so you can still make out the wheel design, plus it'll tie in nicely with the dark window trim etc.

Certainly agree with you about avoiding diamond cuts so if that was the only option you had left then fair play I guess. Personally I would be flogging them or looking to see if another Jag owner wanted to swap for some factory silver ones off another model. There is a thing going on for black wheels at the moment with all the council chavs in their Fiesta STs and Corsa's wanting to look like gangster drug dealers so the second hand market for them is quite buoyant and I don't think you'd have any trouble getting a good price for them.Gloss black will better match the shadowline trim IMO.
I never thought I'd like gloss black but I bought a car in stock with the right spec except the wheels. I now really like them and are definitely better than the diamond cut alternative.
Anthracite would just add another finish that doesn't tie up with the rest of the car.

This. I've currently got two cars with Black wheels and I don't like the wheels much at all. One has gloss Black and as mentioned you have to use tyre dressing consistently and the wheel just blends into the tyre. The other is a Black wheel with a silver face which doesn't look as bad as full Black but still not great for me. I'm old school though and I prefer silver wheels so you can see the detail of the wheel, but I understand that it is trendy to have Black wheels now. I have genuinely never seen a car that looks better for having Black wheels though.

There are 4 different wheels that can be had in silver without diamond cut on the XE R-Sport 25t. 2 different 19" and 2 different 18". Is yours a Black Edition? PERSONALLY, I'm not a lover of black wheels at all, HOWEVER, as has been stated, its your car. All I will say is my BIL has the same car in white with gloss black alloys, and they look 'dusty' a lot of the time. Having black wheels doesn't stop them from looking unclean, so I don't subscribe to that theory.
What I would be tempted to do, is to get the inner spokes and rims done in a metallic black, leaving the diamond turned spokes and outer rims as they are, thus making the spokes look thinner, and giving them more definition. Much like on your 911. I used to do this a lot on the 5 spoke Sport Pack wheel when I worked with Aston Martin, and it was quite popular and looks good whilst still looking OEM.
