So Merc have released this beast to the U.K. public - revving well over 5,000 rpm apparently too with ease.

It’s competition BMW is now only the 530d so a meee 261 bhp. Such a shame BMW refuse to release the 540d and then the M550d in the U.K. yet do in the EU - maybe this will give BMW the kicker it needs.

0-62mph 5 seconds dead incredible

Fantastic engine. I'm waiting until they release the GLS with it in, and I'll try to PX my GL350 for one.

Impressive, but I wonder how much more economical it would be to a petrol one?

Sounds like a really impressive engine. Hopefully they can shoehorn it into the C-Class!

after several hundred miles, which included a mix of city-centre driving and long motorway runs, we managed just shy of 44mpg

For a two tonne car, that's impressive; for a two tonne car that can hit 60 in 5 seconds, it's really quite something.

Incidentally power is quoted as 334hp in the linked evo article, rather than 354 - still class-leading though.

My 740d will hit 62 in 5.2 secs it's nothing new and to be honest diesels never feel that quick if you've had a properly fast car.

Looks nice but a bad ownership proposition after the warranty period is up

Impressive numbers, I’d like to try a big Merc diesel.

My F30 330d always impresses me, it does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds (mainly due to RWD traction and the autobox) yet will happily do 50+ mpg on the motorway. It’s not the most fun car in the world but I’ve got a motorcycle for those duties.

Like all diesels it’ll be terribly unrefined and probably a ticking time bomb, depreciation disaster and if it’s anything like my old E class v6 diesel a smelly thing to get down wind of idling,

A car to avoid like an HIV infected hooker.

Give it a couple of years, you'll be able to buy one on Ebay.

They use weird phrasing when it comes to the red line.

EVO said:
the redline does extend right up to
OK what?
EVO said:
over 5000rpm
and
EVO said:
revs out right through to 5000rpm
Also why rev something 30% past its power peak?
(3600rpm peak power. 1400rpm from peak to redline. Assume 700rpm idle so 1400/4300=33%)

You’d be crazy to do that - buy it used in a few years from the main dealer with the OEM warranty it comes with. Buying it from eBay .... the price would have to be so low for any sane person to buy.

I wonder why you’d need a warranty on a Mercedes diesel...

If you go on a Mercedes forum all you’ll hear are sound bites like “they go on and on” and “100k miles run in I heard some bloke on the Internet did 300k miles in 2 months” or other such willy waving

Autocar reckoned they got just shy of 44mpg average.

That's getting on for half the consumption of my 383bhp (5.5 litre V8) petrol S-class, and I'm betting that the extra torque of the diesel will make it feel much quicker in real-world driving, even if it doesn't quite match the power output.

As a past owner of a V6 diesel S-class, and current owner of a TDV8 Range Rover, I'm not worried about refinement, either - any reasonably modern, multi-cylinder diesel in a well isolated bodyshell is just fine,in reality/

Do you buy new cars or car a couple of years old without warranty? The warranty is bumper to bumper so even if the engine is hewn from granite it doesnt mean anything else might go wrong.

300k in 60 days WTAF that’s 5,000 miles a day 209mph average speed every hour for 60 days straight
2,500-3,000 miles a week maybe so 24k in 60 days ish could happen but if commercial use the warranty is different anyway

Isn’t it outputting similar to the BMW Aplina D5?

BMW offer Europe the 540d the M550d and the alpine D5.

U.K. get offered now 530d 261bhp.... my 8 year old F10 OE is 535d 300bhp and the run out versions were 313/318bhp what a massive setback.
The 540i is nice but as BMW are making the 540d and 550d surely the cost per unit would decrease if they offered it RHD (F10 couldn’t have M550d unit due to a shell design issue but the current 5 series doesn’t have that issue).

I think BMW have lost their way somewhat by omitting the higher output diesels from the UK range. I can understand them deciding it wasn’t worth selling the 550i here for the handful ever shifted but I see loads of 335d and 535d on the roads. Good to see MB filling the gap.
