hit an object in the road

evening all, just venting some frustrations , was travelling over to friends house this evening, travelling along a 50 mph road, come over the crest of a hill at about 45mph , and lo and behold there is a rather large piece of dry stone wall that is lay in the road, probably about 12" tall, wide and about 18" long, two cars coming towards me, no real option to brake as im right on top of it. hits the front bumper, into the alloy, tyre blows off, airbags go pop, windscreen smashes, wishbone is bent, driveshaft snapped, wing is now pushed into the door, to say im devastated is an understatement, just glad it was only my car and no others involved, insurance company have now took it, ready for a good shafting come renewal time, reckon its going to be a write off.
The PH perfect driving brigade will be along in short order to reprimand you in adenoidal tones for not being able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear, however you have my sympathy as I'm sure 95% of other road users would probably have hit the rock as well. Just be thankful it's only metal and your pride that's taken a hit.

In the last month I've unfortunately managed to hit two potholes while driving, causing about £550 worth of damage to my car. The roads over here in yankland just aren't made for extended heavy rainfall. They don't have hardly anywhere near as many drains placed. Thankfully the local council is quite good about receiving claims and I managed to get part of some of my damages claimed for.
I'm usually always careful about spotting them as there are tons of them around here, I was just unfortunate and missed these two.

A few years ago I was heading from Harwich back to London. Going over the top of the Orwell Bridge, I pulled out of the left lane to overtake someone who was travelling at around 60mph - I wasn't much faster, maybe 65-70.
As I went over the rise at the top, there was a bloody wheelbarrow upside down in my lane, about 50m away as it came into view over the crest.
Fortunately the bloke I was in the process of overtaking was switched on and hit his brakes which allowed me to dive back into the left lane in front of him.
Would have made a serious mess of my car otherwise!!
As people have said OP, how did a substantial piece of wall get into the road, any idea?

If you don't, then it's shouldn't be a surprise when you hit something stationary.
Last week I watched a pick-up lose a large wooden frame off the back of its trailer which promptly blocked the left hand side of the B road I was on. I was three or four cars back and every single one of them just drove around it, knobheads. I stopped, stuck the hazards on and put it on the verge - job jobbed. Two days later, I spot a large branch blocking the opposite lane on a different road (still a B road) and again, all the cars approaching it just drove around it, more knobheads. On the way back 15 mins later, the thing was still there so again, hazards on, jumped out and moved it as far as I could out of the way (it was a big bugger) and cleared the road.
Apologies, of no help to the OP but it just amazes me sometimes that people are so selfish that an act of common sense or charity just bypasses them, somebody else's problem and all that.

When I was in primary school, nearly 50 years ago, one of the parents at my school was killed avoiding an animal that ran out in the road, he swerved and hit an oncoming car.
This event, somehow, has stuck in my brain ever since... it SO easy to react to an animal, or in your case, a large stone, instinctively swerving to avoid, into more danger.
I am really pleased in your case you fought the swerve instinct and instead possibly avoided a worse outcome. It’s a small consolation I know,

I came over the brow of a hill about 10 years ago to find about 30 railway sleepers in the road. I had passed a truck about 2 miles before trailing a retaining strap behind him, didn't really think much of it at the time. Thankfully most were on the opposite side of the road so managed to avoid them
I once hit a deer in the road. It was already dead and I was following a range rover, at a safe distance if he had decided at all to apply his brakes.
He didnt and just drove straight over it no issues, my lowered XR3i at the time wasnt so lucky to be able to just do this. Front bumper got massive damage and I was lucky to not damage more but i smelt like a burger joint for weeks where ever i drove.
