The engine is the heart and soul of any desirable car.
I have corrected that for you smile

I think Tesla have disproved that.
Like it or not.

You're ability to use PH quoting is poor. hehe

But seriously. Tesla have a very desirable range of cars. People want them. Most can't afford them. But they want them. Because they are stylish and the numbers (particularly in ludicrous mode) are daft. Your modern buyer doesn't care so much about how the numbers are made. Certainly future buyers don't if we're talking residual values.
I'm with Grancab 100%.

Pure numbers don't give you heart and soul and emotion.

Stylish? The whole range looks bland.

People respect Teslas but they don't crave them.

Ricardo designed the hybrid elements of the P1 power train as well, so have form on the electrification side for that type of product

New Range Extender? biggrin
Are you claiming ICE vehicles never run out of gas?

All articles involving McLaren get them out from under their bridges, this one has delivered the motherload.

They do need to start making them sound better, its a big part of the supercar theatre. Definitely lacking from the current crop of Macs
Seem to be doing pretty well regardless then.

BTW I remember seeing the visitors book at Ricardo’s it had signatures from Mr Rolls & Mr Royce in it. I think they are one of the oldest Ltd companies in the Country. But I might be wrong!

McLaren still can't match Ferrari's engineering prowess.
And Ferrari still can't match McLarens stunning lines.

Touché shall we say?
McLaren have only ever made one truly beautiful car

It's not like much recently is universally acclaimed as a looker from either company.

There are 3 certainties in life:

- Taxman will get his dues
- Grancab will comment on any McL thread - how many posts so far on this one smile

I struggle to warm to McLaren but in fairness I always found the styling of the F1 to be a touch bland...

Looking at their site I'm surprised just how many models they have on their books.. The P1 is the only one that seems to emote a degree of soul (and drama). The Senna is just too flamin' ugly to be a consideration unfortunately. It somehow manages to neither be attractive nor brutally efficient looking.

You put the 550/575 in a post about good looking Ferrari's? laugh

It looks like a Supra with down syndrome. It's a mutt with a spangly badge.

Curious how many commenters have actually experienced the sheer joy of owning one.

Most of this talk about them not sounding good is internet conjecture IMO. I was behind a local guy's 720 in traffic the other day and it sounded brilliant. Not outrageous, but very cool, which is pretty much Mclaren's design ethos isnt it?

Also, here's a controversial opinion (I'll wait for my P45 in the post) but I don't think any of the Fezzas posted above are particularly beautiful, F40 included. The 355 and the 550/575 haven't aged brilliantly.

I personally think the 355 has aged beautifully. Was Designed in, what 1992/1993? 25 years old......there are very few cars at 25 years of age give or take a year look that fresh.

I will admit that I don't think I've ever seen a 355 in the metal, and a lot is lost in terms of proportions and presence through a photo.

Thats not quite true. The battery and its packaging was designed elsewhere, the integration was maybe done at Ricardo.

A 355 in the metal is still an achingly pretty car today - in my opinion.

I hope you do get to see one in the metal some day, then your opinion on the 355 will definitely change. Compared with the fussy, vented, bewinged monsters all too common today, the 355 is a simple, clean, unadorned, sleekly beautiful design - especially in profile. The 348 came close but the 355 fixed the little details wonderfully.

And with Cosworth building a NA V12 with 1,000 hp weighing a mere 206kg for Aston Martin, could McLaren be shooting themselves in the foot long term by being a bit objective about building cars?

I know the business plan has worked immensely well so far but surely at some point residuals/long term profitability will take a hit if their entire range has very similar powerplants in various states of tune.
Not NA, but was very impressed with the small 400bhp Engine that Nissan put in the front of that wedge they took to Le Mans, only about 40Kg I think.
