Hi,

Have read through a few threads on here and I also found 1 specific for the topic but it appears to have not been updated. Wonder if anyone could give their take/thoughts and which way it may go?

My issue is that I would like to change my 8 seater people carrier (euro 3) to a more up to date petrol model. Have been looking at Honda Elysion 3.0 VCM but have come across the obvious no euro classification. Imports attract a capped tax bracket I believe and the emission part of the v5 is never completed. Obviously the old emission classes also didn't take into account particulate matter. Have found a few examples online and put the plates on the ULEZ checker and the ones that are 55 plates seem to all pass but prior do not (despite having what I believe is the same engine). What bothers me is the large disclaimer at the bottom of the ULEZ checker where it says no claim against wrong info blah blah blah. It seems given that an 04 has the same engine and does not pass that the checker is based on date of manufacturer which is exactly against the statements made on the ULEZ page (unless of course they do have data and the ecu has a modified map). The car that I have seen has only just be registered so is not coming up on the database so I cannot check specifically but I do not value the information on the page that much anyway given the large disclaimer on the ULEZ checker.

Had a very interesting conversation with TFL yesterday they told me either choose a Euro car, or get the car tested by Honda ( this I would imagine would be 100k plus), or get certificate of conformity which I believe wont help anyway. I then questioned if I drive past an ANPR what will happen and the answer is that if no ULEZ data available then an immediate charge would be levied against the registered owner. If you dont think it is correct it is down to the owner to prove differently whatever happened to the legal framework in the UK of a presumption of innocence until proven guilty :-)

Tks

Stop typing Jap. It's offensive. This isn't just pointed at you - I see it typed a lot on here and it should stop.

e.g. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-leicestershire...

That's a new one on me, and I have Japanese family!

Jap to me is no different to Brit. If it's not used in a pejorative way why is it offensive?

Been looking at this as I'm planning to import an MPV from Japan and don't live far from the South Circular - want to not have a problem in a few years time.

TFL can presumably pull emissions stats and Euro standard stuff from the DVLA databases but as you say, imports don't have that.

Where there isn't data they look to be using the date of first registration (in the original country if an import), and if it's after the time when a Euro standard was compulsory, then it's assumed to be equivalent.

For petrols, Euro 4 was required for new type approvals from Jan 2005, and there's a grace period of a year after that to clear unsold stock - anything sold/registered after has to comply. So a petrol import registered after January 2006 would be assumed to be Euro 4 - before that, no dice. Thus some 55 plate would be OK, some not.

I don't really blame TFL for trying to keep it simpler, they don't have an army of experts on obscure JDM cars to know what might or might not be different with particular models or years.

Surely it’s the context? I’m pretty sure the term ‘jap import’ isn’t the same as calling someone a ‘jap’ as part of an argument.

If it is offensive whatever the context then a hell of a lot of people don’t know. Google jap imports and there are hundreds of businesses with jap or jap imports in their business name.

Just the same way the N word is? It's not up to anyone else other than those affected by it to say if it's offensive or not.

The N word is mostly used in a pejorative way and that's what makes it offensive. Jap is commonly used with no outrage...

Edited to add...

A quick search in the forum's also shows it's used quite a lot in many topics.

As someone said, its all about context. When used as a contraction of an adjective most people understand it is not being used as an offensive slur and purely as a contraction i.e. Jap Fest. If it was such a derogatory thing I am sure the Japanese embassy would have lodged complaints against a national car festival that uses the name by now.

Absolutely ridiculous if you can’t tell the difference. Another thread ruined for no reason.

So that's any use of the following terms banned (as headmaster has just informed us that the context doesn't seem to matter)...and I'm sure there is some snowflake, somewhere who'd feel offended by the term.

Snowflake
Yank
Brit
Kraut
Frog
Chav
Scouser
Wooly
Special
Foreigner
Brexiteer
Remainer
Politician
Surrender Monkey
Traveller
Slant
Slope
Incline (probably)
etc.

This was my first thought as well. The terminally offended will find offence in anything. I wonder if he's ever had a NIP through the post.

Someone should tell the organizers of 'Japfest', 'Simply Jap', et al.

I think context and intention needs to be consider here... We're talking about cars ffs.

Although I suspect GroundEffect likes to play the SJW for fun.

jog on...it's all about context, and it's plainly obvious that nobody on here refering to japanese cars on here as jap is doing so with any derogatory connotations. Hell, a decent percentage of PH are massive JAP car fans.

I assume you'll be writing to the organisers of Japfest asking them to change the name of their car shows next?

Jesus wept...

I would think here that the same rules apply for cars as for bikes, ie if it is under the limits and you can get a certificate of conformity you can then apply for an individual exemption. Obviously it is massively annoying that TFL wont then approve all the identical vehicles but they're not in it to make life easy!

@ Sjg the date is not relevant TFL even say that on the ULEZ pages. Some cars around 2000 are compliant. What grates me is that they have the page with the checker but have the heavy disclaimer so pointless for us checking, maybe they should have put do not use this page if your vehicle is imported from NON european region and certainly for the ones I have checked they should just say no results available.

There is a very interesting page after doing a search on a vehicle that has just be registered the page says that any vehicle registered after 2017 are exempt maybe that's a loophole :-) Havent looked at a recent V5 for what is on there?
