Had a result on the V70 turbo pipe fix, bodged to keep us on the road early last week, part form Volvo and now working £116 all in, very pleased with service from garage. to be fair most on here would have left it with the "bodge" fix....but my wife is boss in this house. She is very pleased that it now has some power back as well

Mondeo man in Germany is having no end of fun....i hope he gets it sorted for return journey, but fuel consumption will be worse if he fills up the boot with cheaper booze for coming back with

Disagree, the ST170's aren't great for cheap shedding, especially the few that are left under £1k.
A Fast (ish) Ford with a years MOT for a grand. Use it, abuse it, when something goes bang, flog it for breaking. Worst case scenario it costs you 700. What's not to like?

I know how much they are to run and what a cheap one is like to own and use every day. You'll spend more time and money keeping it drivable than is worth. For a cheap and enjoyable shed, the 1.6 is by far the better option. Any ST170 under £1k will want a clutch/fly, cambelt and countless small things that just make it pointless as a shed. A 1.6 in better shape can be had for £500 and won't cost anything for years.

I got an 05 MK2, 2.0 which has been totally reliable, but my shedding outlook is always if it lasts 6 months, I've had my money's worth. anything more is a bonus.

I never change the Oil, and frankly the clutch has been hanging on there for the last year. No way will I replace it when it finally goes, but still it soldiers on. It's been a year now and I won't weep if it breaks tomorrow.

I had an 02 2.0 Ghia that was also totally reliable and only owned me £275 with 12 months on it. Had a few ST170's, all £500 sheds. owned my current one for 2 years and just over £3k into it, the other 2 were too rough to justify keeping. I suppose you might get lucky with them, my 2nd one just had a new clutch so it was probably a good enough shed, still running today too.

Given how cheaply oil can be had I think that's a bit mean. Although it's £28 for some special oil for my Golf to keep the DPF happy, but I think worth it still.

We had a mk 1 tdci ghia estate - brilliant car. However I punted it on once the sills needed the attention of a mig. Would have another as long as it was rot free.

Agreed. I think that even in shedding, leaving the oil and filter forever is a false economy

Always had a soft spot for the ST170 but I think there will be more hassle than it's worth given the age of these cars..my 1.8 edge is on 75k and flew through the MOT last yr but I think it's on borrowed time before something goes...time will tell.

hehe The boot was actually half full on the journey to Germany with empty bottles for "pfand" money. It'll be a full boot on the way back too.

I'm not too concerned with the car. I did about 100kms in it today, just very noisy inside and have to be gentle with the throttle to not put it in limp mode. I always have the fall back here that if it all goes tits up I can normally sell the car for spares at roughly the price I paid for it in the UK. A similar spec Mondeo here (LHD mind you) are about 5,000 Euros. So I could see most, if not more, of my £870 investment selling it on FB market place. I did it in the past with a Saab 9-3 that turbo blew, bought the car for £600, repair bill was going to be 1,500euros, sold it for spares in 15mins for 300 Euros. Still cheaper than a flight ticket.

My old 316i hadn't had a service for 56k. That's 56k oil and filter that had been in it since 2007. The fact it still ran was a wonder to me. I traded that for a knackered ST170, both cars ended up being stripped for parts.

That's crazy to me. I think that a lot of people who aren't into cars just don't realise what an important job it does.

I'm not one of those people who changes it every 3000 miles or something silly, but I wouldn't leave oil in there for that long or that many miles. Modern synthetic oils are fantastic, but they must have their limts

I agree. I use the proper filter from the franchised dealer, and a decent oil when it's on some kind of offer. £30 all in (& my own labour of course).
Once a year, that's a wise investment.

Anyone running a Rover 75 as a winter shed?

Mine passed the MOT no advisories at all a few weeks ago.

Now within a week the headlight bulb has gone ( a bugger to change), thermostat borked, using a lot of water and the EML goes off/on at random times.

At £400 for a year of trouble free motoring I suppose I can't complain.
I've looked after my parents one for 3 years so far. Did the thermostat stick open or closed? This one is open and has been for the last 60k+! Renault 5 thermostat in the top hose and been perfect for the three years.

I retrofitted factory xenon lights for a hundred quid and haven't put a bulb in it for 2 years and 40k.

Is it a CDT?

Yep.

My sense of mechanical sympathy is pretty strong.

Just changed the oil and the air filter on my 2007 Focus diesel.

Genuine Ford air and oil filters are a tenner each. Shell Helix semi synth was on offer for less than £20 a gallon.

Cost was £40 and took 30 minutes.

I give it an oil change every 10,000 miles. Cost is insignificant compared to what I spend on fuel.

Had the car from new. Now done 170,000 miles.

I'm in a good mood. Passed MOT today with just one advisory on rear pad wear.

My daily golf is still going strong..

Almost 260k now from a £300 purchase price 2.5 years ago...

Driven hard daily and still returns 48 - 53 mpg

Also I won this on ebay the other day for £250 with an mot until end of August and 3/4 tank of diesel...its got a prop vibration and I've covered 380 miles in the week I've had it.. I got a new prop bearing for £15 and will see if that fixes the issue.. Other than that I'm not sure what to do with it

I get the idea of stress-free motoring with sheds, I’ve done it myself, and agree that it’s very liberating.

What I don’t get is those of you with multiple sheds.  That would just depress me, to look out the window and see multiple piles a sh*t parked hehe
