^^ that's not in the spirit of shedding!!!!!
My rules of shed are.

I must be the final keeper.
It only gets replaced if it Borks spectacularly or the mot fail list is huge.
I totally understand the itch to change!! My shed B6 Passat tdi won’t die. I’m desperate for something else, but after 3 years of very little maintenance she’s still going strong. I even put petrol in it last week, it was drained and still plods on.

I still look at alternative cars all the time, for that fateful day the Passat actually does drive no more, with interest and excitement I actually want it to break sometimes.

My Saab 9-5 Aero just hit 150k miles and passed its M.O.T no problem. 5 years of straight passes bar one year that needed a brake pipe doing.

Remapped to 275BHP and 420nm so still pretty nippy compared to 90% of rep mobiles out there.

It is getting a bit tatty on the outside but is kept in good nick under the skin.

My shed bought 1.5 years ago for 450 quid, has cost me on top another 1350 quid not including fuel and insurance... My budget a year is 500 quid to run so I need to keep it another 6 months.

It also needs money spent on it, so not winning at shedding so far.

Realistically you should have burned it and bought another 2 sheds with the money you've spent on it. 500 quid a year budget is supercar territory in shed land :-)

With the Saab 9-5 there's quite a fuel penalty with the automatic gearbox. My manual averages 31.5 in mixed driving with highs of 40 on the motorway.

I guess it depends on the work and the shed. I think my Golf will want a DMF in the next year or so and I will likely replace it since that's my only concern I will likely do it. Cheap fuel, tax and insurance costs mean it won't take long to pay for itself over some of my other sheds. If it gets near a 4 figure spend then it's off though.

Check out a crowd called DMR on eBay, they do solid conversions. Fitted three to VWs and one to our Rover 75 CDT. 50k later, still going strong. Changed the drive of the Fabia vRS I fitted it to, as it knocked bout 5kg off the flywheel, made it feel way more willing to go. (I know on diesel it seems counter-intuitive as the kinetic energy carried in the rotational momentum of the flywheel allows the engine to slow down slowly, aiding fuel economy on a longer off-throttle deceleration)

Just checked, the one we fitted to the last B6 Passat (5-speed 1.9 TDI) was £120 delivered.

Interesting, thanks. I was doing a bit of research where people suggested it was a bad idea on a diesel and ended up noisier than a failed DMF. Have you had any issues?

The main bulk was a wheel bearing and starter motor going in first few months. The funny thing was whilst I was looking in glove box, I found a warranty scheme that would have covered it , last owner had bought one.

Do you need new? Shed club insists members look around for good 2nd hand parts at times... my coil pack was 14 quid from eBay breakers :-)
I'm not an advocate of new parts, unless necessary, to keep a shed running. However all the things I've read on-line (shedding essential) says that the ecu is fussy and a genuine Delphi one is needed as pattern or second hand parts often fail quickly.

That said I managed to whip the coil pack off at the weekend and run a spark test on each cylinder individually. All four fired OK so I'm not convinced it's the culprit. The plugs were absolutely shot mind so I chucked on 4 new thinking that would solve my issues. Alas no. According to the online experts it could be injectors, egr, fuel pump/swirlpot/filter, wiring or ECU. So I think I'm going to have to admit defeat and sent it to my cheapy back street mechanic to do some more accurate diagnostics. If not I'll potentially be replacing more than I need to.

It's times like this that my eye starts wandering and the urge for change kicks in, but I need to me sensible and the Zaf has been a reliable steed for nearly three years now so I know it's good. Any new car runs the risk of it having it's own underlying problems so better the devil you know. Helped by a compression test too at the weekend showing all good.

Afternoon all...first query on this thread...have been a proponent of shed motoring in the past and have successfully run a number of vehicles for under £1k...

Mother is looking at giving up driving and has offered me her Golf (53 plate 1.6 with 48k on the clock) for one of the kids to learn to drive...I'm thinking of taking it over for my daily commute, she's going to put it through MOT before she makes final decision, but one thing that she's told me is that the emissions light keeps coming on - I've advised her to run it on redex and speak to her mechanic about cataclean to see if that helps.

Are there any known issues with Golf emissions that mean I'll be taking on an expensive lemon?

Get a £15 code reader and plug it in... they're a godsend!

I'm going to hazard a guess that it's an o2 sensor but if it drives fine and that's the only issue I'd still a punt

I'm currently considering a 52 plate 320d with a whopping 73'000 miles. For 500 quid it should be OK.

Me too, on both counts. I bet she's never got more than half way to the red line all the time she's owned it, the poor thing(s).
