My first 270m in the vitara averaged 29mpg with the faulty MAF in place. Its now swapped out and I'll be hoping that improves slightly. The idle and warning light have now corrected themselves at least.

Thanks everyone, will cancel the viewing and keep looking. Just found out from my mum that admiral will honour a 3 year gap between insurance without losing NCB so that time pressure is off.

Caution. I was told same. Turned out not to be

recently interested in a Roomster Scout, Kangoo car and Doblo car all around the £1500 mark on facebook, they looked decent buys and sold like shirt of a shovel before I had chance to blink.
I've noticed that clean cars with good history around this price mark disappear off facebook very smartly. One of the popular choices around that price bracket is the Skoda Octavia Vrs. They really don't hang around, probably because they seem to be little over half the price of the equivalent engined VW Golf GTI.

Nice paint job....Halfords rattle can job and a bodged screen replacement.

Mine didn't do that. 2006.

German stuff is crap. That looks like a BMW chain guide failure.

I suffered two Meganes, thankfully not mine. Never, ever again.
Do you think that the problem on all of them is a bad screen replacement? It's a known problem which is recognised by Honda so I'm surprised at your conclusion

Thank you very much for this. I told my mum to call Admiral and request this in writing, after being bounced around various departments the eventual email she received said something to the effect of 'we will give you a discount equivalent of 14 years NCB if you take out a new policy with us within 3 years of your last policy'. That sounds very much like a one off discount followed by starting off with 1 year NCB the year after... rolleyes

As such she has just insured herself on my MX5, it's currently SORN but will do a few bits to it and put it through an MOT so she can use it for a few months while we look for something more suitable for her.

Thinking about my next shed...

Out of all the French brands which one reigns supreme in terms of driver comfort (road absorption)?

Or are they all equal? - my head is telling me Citereon (but I've never owned one...)

Also, I know Volvo is the king of seats, but what about ride quality?

Citroen with hydro suspension is surely the answer. My experience of Citroens in general has been very favourable regarding ride comfort.

I had a DS3 Crossback (I know not technically a Citroen) as a hire car and it was without doubt the most comfortable suspension of any car I've been in.

I keep thinking that a last gen C5 in a decent spec would be a perfect shed

Funny you should say that.

I was at a breakers in York today picking up some BMW bits and I looked at all the Civics, about eight in all.

None were rusty here. Oh well. It's only cosmetic anyway so hardly a cause for concern on a £1000 banger!

I had 12 yrs ncb before going into company cars for 3 yrs. Just inside 3 yrs went back to insuring my own car to discover My previous ncb no longer valid, I was given 3 yrs of co car insurance ncb........ despite keeping all my own previous records plus getting verification of entitlement from my employer.....

C5 Exclusive has the hydro suspension, not all of them do. Volvo v70 is pretty cushy too.
For me, a shed has to be S-class comfortable and it must be clean on the inside and out. I hate driving dirty cars, it’s like not brushing your teeth in the morning.

Yep. Wouldn't bother me. A coat or two of rust converter and ignore it. Then you've got a great, reliable, cheap runabout

Not feeling the joy of shedding today.
Micra Shed wouldn't start after work.
First time a shed has left me by the roadside in 100K miles plus except once with a puncture.
Recovery said it's a gearbox inhibitor switch.
Just what you need on a Friday evening. hehe

Uh oh. Is it an automatic by any chance? We had a similar issue on my dads auto Almera years back. Ended up getting a mechanic to bypass it

yes It's an auto.
Hoping to do the same as you've said.
Just waiting to get into a mechanic who can fix it in Leeds.

My 2004 E46 330cdm passed the MOT with no advisories yesterday, repaying the investment I made in 2 rear tyres and 2 wiper blades the day prior, phew! I was a bit miffed that I had to pay £4.50 for each wiper blade from Wilko as they have stopped selling the £2 ones.

Thought I would add a picture of my shed which I've had for 18 months now. It's the 2.2 diesel which has averaged 57mpg over the last 8000 miles. Had 118k when I bought it and just under 128k now.

Photo flatters it a little has there are a few stone chips and minor marks. OK, technically it was a touch above shed budget, but I need to do a regular 300 mile round trip and wanted something reasonably comfy and economical and the spaceship came with a decent spec.

What I was unaware at the time I bought it, was the reputation for cracking exhaust manifolds and the pain in the ass it is to fix. Of course it cracked after 6 months and took another 6 months for me to get it sorted.

Otherwise it's been pretty faultless although I've changed all the service filters and fluids.Have also added a Nextbase DAB unit and roof aerial as I would miss that. Only £40 though.
I've had one eye on those Diesel Civics as a potential replacement for our Petrol FR-V which isn't exactly frugal, but just wonder at what mileage do they decide they want a new Dual Mass Flywheel?
Mine was changed at 100k a year or so before I bought it. Got a receipt in the paperwork. It's a £1k job so has the potential to make replacement uneconomic so best to check it's not rattling or the clutch slipping.

Strange issue with my CRV this morning. It is an auto and the D indicator on the instrument cluster started flashing, quick google suggests transmission issue. Still drove fine, the light stopped when I turned it off and on again. Seems a common fault of Honda of this age (2002) and will probably come back again soon. Most posts seem to suggest its a pressure switch on top of the transmission, dead easy to change. If that sorts it, then yippee. If it is more serious, then it is crunch time for the CRV I fear... I only justify the awful fuel economy with the fact that besides the brakes, it hasn't cost me a lot (still hasn't been cheap, but not terrible) to run.

Still, i'd have thought a more serious fault would cause a noticeable fault when driving. Fingers crossed.

Edit - Actually, to be fair to it, I've just added up the repair costs for my first year with the car and besides brakes, nothing major has needed doing that wasn't covered under the warranty when I got it...
The last 7 months it has behaved pretty well overall.

I'd almost be tempted to take the battery off for 5 mins and reconnect it. I will be using this method more often in the future after the weekend just gone, spending a few hours trying to sort warning lights out on the Lexus with the offical Toyota tech software and failing. A last ditch attempt to sort it with taking the battery off and on again, sorted. hehe
