The MX-6 is an underrated car certainly - as far as I'm concerned it's a lovely and clean berlinetta type shape, good sounding revvy engine, good handling. And for a pocket money price.

I guess the fact that they are FWD is why they are generally over-looked by the enthusiast, personally I enjoy FWD just as much as RWD for a road car. It would be good to see more people get into these cars as they getting rare and are an interesting alternative to some of the more ubiquitous options.
Surprisingly, in the review mentioned in the opening article the 2 rear drive cars made up the numbers and 2 front wheel drive coupes were awarded first and second place

I say surprisingly as the review was done by one of the rwd-fundamentalists from EVO mag

Whereas the Cougar that replaced it.... everyone loves a Cougar (more than they love a Probe) biggrin
Apart from the Ford Cougar, a car made up of literally hundreds of bad styling ideas biggrin

Not for me as I think the MX6 has aged badly from a style point of view - Calibra, 200SX, SVX similar. But.....great shedding nonetheless so fair play if it's your thing clap

There’s something so right about the proportions in my eyes.
It’s as if the stylist used light touched when sketching it, using a 6H pencil instead of a 6B (and yes, I realise that’s not how they are designed, it’s just an allusion)
I was always amazed st how relatively flat, and low the boot lid was compared to a Calibra, which always begged the question on luggage capacity (and something I never found out about)
A dentist who lived up the road from me back then had one, and it piqued my interest in them to the extent that I went and had a test drive in a 2-3yr Old one at a Main dealer
For whatever reason, and probably because I needed my bumps feeling, I bought a 16v Calibra instead....

Here's the same engine in my old MX-3. Another lovely car, vastly underrated, and one which I'd have another.

I think the Probe does this too and from some angles is still very elegant and sleek. And arguably “modern” looking.

For me both the Probe and MX-6 are very sleek and clean forms. A lot of recent coupe designs are more bulky and they are often a lot more fussy in terms of having styling features including bulges, creases, vents, scoops, etc. Those features do add visual interest and drama so I'm not being negative as such, I guess some might say the Probe, MX-6 and certain other '90's era coupes are somewhat bland by todays standards. I think they are very nicely proportioned cars, especially since they share the platform with the 626 saloon and so have a relatively long wheelbase, which I've always liked.

Each to their own. Leggy mid-90s coupe with FWD V6 and indifferent styling - meh?
And I speak as someone who formerly owned a 300ZX! At least that was RWD and had T-tops and Lambo Diablo lights.
As I say, each to their own. beer
Also, off road since 2015 but has a current MOT?

I'm with this comment, there are definitely some rose tinted specs firmly on to go as far as describe it as "exotic" biggrin lol

But if its cheap enough I suppose it would be a fair run around, wouldn't be as excited about it as a Jaxuar XKR or something though either on powerplant or looks.....

I was wondering where I have seen these before and remembered - just about every episode of the police stop programme whenever they have new zealand material, with some native dude with no mot tax or insurance lol

Love the looks of these and always have done ... for some reason though I thought these were auto-only, god knows why!

Looks tidy inside too!
I'm pretty sure the MX-3 V6 is auto only
Definitely did manual MX-3 V6 as well
Oh OK. I def recall something odd about the MX-3, maybe because it was a 1.8 V6?

Love this car!! Wish they made them today. Beautiful interior and classic body.

I was 18 and came across a black one and a red one both manual. Put a $500 deposit down on the black one. Went to finish the paper work a week later and the dealership lot was empty and the building locked and barren. Ohhhh kay. Never got my $500 back.

I would buy one today if i could but they are basically non existent in any proper condition.

the mx3 was 1.8 v6, the 323 and xedos had the 2.0 v6.

I had an mx6 years, cracking car, think i had it about 2 years before the wife wrote it off. Whilst not the quickest car it did go well enough and the engine sounded nice at full chat. at idle you could barely even hear it running.

very reliable car and i still like the looks, do occasionally check ebay for them.

had a 323 v6 a few years after the mx6 which i bought for £500. another underrated little car, lasted me about 4 years needing pretty much nothing at all in that time and it got abused every time it was driven.

Back on the market for £3750, having had a front end respray and a few other jobs done.

Currently SORN’d, and has hardly done any miles since 2019.

Very nice if only I had room.

Worked for a Mazda dealer when these were launched along with the 3 & 5 and the Xedos they had a great range of cars then.

Bought one for £400 about a year ago, drove it about for a month or so and enjoyed the v6 sound and then got rid. Would own another, as long as it wans't rusty or leaked oil.

I've never driven one of these but always liked the look of them.

I honestly miss the era of affordable 6 cylinder 4 seat coupes from the market. I had a couple of Ford Cougar V6s in my 20s and loved those, because they were decent cars and they were accessible for a driver in their early 20s who didn't have the luxury of pouring their entire income into a car.

Actually I'll expand that. I miss the mainstream brand coupes. The Probe, Cougar, Calibra, MX-3, MX-6, Prelude, RX-7, Puma, 100NX, 200SX. There's only really the Toybaru in that segment now.

By my own reckoning, a 3 door variant of saloon car isn't nearly as appealing, even if most of the above cars were rebodied other models.

Looking at the magazine road test scans from further up the page, I can see the Calibra was £21k in 1992, and I assume the other cars tested (MX-6, Prelude, 200SX) were comparably priced.

That's a lot in 1992 money! £46k using the BoE's inflation calculator (https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator)
