The Selec-Trac® 4x4 System features a full-time mode that will automatically switch from 2WD to 4WD when conditions dictate. Relying on internal wheel speed and traction control sensors, Selec-Trac makes driving in uneven terrains and inclement weather safer and smoother while delivering superior efficiency when four-wheel drive isn’t needed.
Thanks for that. This is a recent development that I need to investigate. It looks like some sort of hybrid which balances economy with safety, without being a true full-time 4x4. It seems like an unduly complex and expensive solution though, as on my wife's Cherokee XJ there was only 1 mpg difference between running in 2WD and full-time 4WD, but the difference when going around a roundabout on a greasy road was dramatic.

It looks OK, but its the same price as an entry level Discovery.

I know where I'd spend my money.

All U.K. JLs have auto 4wd mode selectrac , Rubi having slightly different ratios. Purest might not love but I expect has wider market appeal.

Some well judged improvements on the JK.

Top is a 2 man job, weighing 60kg or so; any challenge is more around the awkward lift. Soft top provides many combinations for good weather motoring.

Some irritations on U.K. cars; it’s Rubi Lite vs the US and some items spec’able on cars in other Euro markets, like supply with standard soft top only and traditional keys are not available in the UK

Not sure I get the too expensive argument. OK, Jeep has raised the price a lot but plenty at healthy discounts already registered etc.

Lot of car for the money when it comes to substance.

What do you consider healthy discounts and do you have any examples?

I’ve just got an ex demonstrator 2.0t Rubicon in Mojito!

Compared to the prices being achieved for the last of the Defenders (2016) with low mileage I think the Wrangler is good value.

I am not sure that the Wrangler is there to massively boost Jeep UK's sales. they will leave that to the likes of the wee Renegade which are everywhere, on PCP Motability and the like. that's where the sales and profits will come from and the Cherokee which I do find oddly priced compared to the Compass. Nearly new Cherokees are better VFM than nearly new Compass's.

For me it’s more about comparing prices of several items. As referenced earlier. You could buy a Porsche Boxster for the same money as the Jeep in the UK. Or two Fiesta ST’s and 5k in your pocket.

I’m sure in the US the Jeep is pitched quite differently.
A rather bizarre comparison? I’m not sure that anyone would be cross shopping those vehicles with a wrangler.
The point was to highlight the lack of perceptible value in this Jeep compared to what else you could get for the ££££.

Having said that, you could get 9 Suzuki Swifts for one Range Rover.

I’m not sure where that leaves us tbh. Perhaps it tells us that the SUV market in the UK is currently strong to the point of silly.

Here in Australia they're going to be about £35k equivalent and as they're RHD someone is definitely taking the piss with UK pricing.
If they were 35k here I’d drive the shogun there tomorrow and pick one up.

A Rubicon ( 4 door) is a fairly high end configuration

https://www.torontochrysler.com/new/Jeep/2019-Jeep...

Canadian price $61,720, or about 35k in sterling.

EU charge 10% on US car imports.
US charge 2.5% on cars coming the other way.

A certain D Trump has threatened to shake that up a tadge by shifting the decimal point one place to the right.
I don’t blame him and if I was in America I’d be wanting him to do this already. He should at least match the EU tariffs and that would get the much needed Wall done.

There’s is this view. The Wranger surely is a superior vehicle in every way to the Defender yet people pay stupid money for old Defenders.

I couldn’t though not state my preference which would be for a Toyota Landcruiser commercial

Each to their own I suppose! Certainly not for me, and IMO woefully overpriced for what it is and the compromises it brings, and worse, the way it looks. But that is of course absolutely of no importance whatsoever, it's great that we all like different things - and you like it, you bought it, and I'm sure you'll love it! I can imagine it will be whole lot more relevant without the bits you can take off schlepping around Greece in the sun.

Enjoy!

I would not use mine as an only car. Admittedly the circumstances are very different- I keep it in the Arizona desert and they are cheap there, with cheap parts. I have been through four windscreens and a refit is about $100, so not a burden.

Mine in is the older ( and worse) JK but I will get the JL without a doubt- just want to wait for year 2. They are not superb on quality; lots of little nits, but they are the lowest depreciating vehicles in the US.

Thread resurrection! Looking for a new family bus for the wife, looking at all sorts of different vehicles from Mercedes GLE63’s, E63’s, Audi RS4’s etc. But after long discussions about not being able to drive fast anywhere due to traffic and road conditions, we reevaluated what we would enjoy in a new vehicle, both of us had enough of car park and pothole damage stresses which had been gladly missing from our lives after running sheds for the past few years. So we booked an extended test drive of a 2021 4door overland with the skytouch electric roof (great service from Jeep Maidstone), totally expecting to be very disappointed.. However we absolutely fell in love with the unbreakable tank like feel of it! Pot holes nolonger have to be dodged, don’t need to worry about idiots opening doors into it due to the sidestep height. Great fun and didn’t once feel like it was once going to fall over in the bends!

Poorly taken pictures:

Placing my order for a new identical one to the above this week all going according to plan, readers thread to follow once delivered.

Had mine 2 years and still love it. Just be careful when the road is slippy in 2wd mode. It can catch you out!
