Is this the masterpiece V8 you're talking about?
It is - the problem with most modern cars is the stupidly long service intervals. Take our X5 - runs very hot for emissions reasons, it has a hot V8 with the turbos in the middle of the engine block, it has very active stop start and yet BMW specify 15 to 20k service intervals. The spark plugs are every 40k Miles! And lo and behold, suddenly the engine gets a reputation for eating turbos at 70k, camshafts at 100 and in general the whole block is scrap by about 120k. Theoretically you can have the car for 10yrs, do 100k in it and do Just 5 services?!!
The same applies to the N62 - runs hot on thin oil with 15 to 20k service intervals. Of course by 200k the bearings will be shot. Which is par for the course for the early Cayennes too. Or 996s or pretty much any car with a mildly performance orientated engine...

My mate's old car, comes up often and has been at this particular dealer's for an absolute age. In the flesh, the colour combo is absolutely stunning but it obviously puts a lot off!
I can't help thinking it will be a true classic one day in the future.

BBR SUPER 180GT. Eibach suspension. Stormy blue mica paint. Garaged, 30k miles from new and in seemingly cracking order.
Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

N62 isn't worth the hassle in my experience. For the sort of trouble you can get I'd only find it tolerable in an M car.
For run of the mill BMW's I'd sooner look at the N52 every day of the week.
Yes, but a 6-er is a big car and you will definitely feel the -ve 100bhp... For run of the mill BMW's I'd sooner look at the N52 every day of the week.

No single disastrous bill but I can tell you, my God can I tell you, that floating from one £500 bill to another almost month to month in that time frame is genuinely horrific. Bear in mind this was the 'forum' car I had, it'd had thousands spent on upkeep before I bought it.
Even after all that there's still the potential (and likely at that) issue of valve stem oil seals to address. In cold weather there was more often than not a misfire at start-up due to a known issue with the valvetronic. Albeit ultimately a minor issue, you try selling a car like that on to someone who isn't one of the barge initiated.
Very good engine when it worked but the feeling for me was always 'what next?' and it's just not a healthy position to be in. I assume the x50i cars sorted some issues over the x45i ones but I just get the feeling that a high mileage N62 is just chunky bills waiting to happen.
I think the turning point for me must have been the day I collected it after getting the alternator bracket leak fixed. Drove to the supermarket from the garage and when I came back out there was a puddle of coolant under the car. It couldn't even muster half an hour without grief.
I wasn't alien to spending a lot on upkeep, an e39 M5 saw to that. But it's far easier to tolerate knowing what it is and it never actually let me down.
So yeah, for a 'run of the mill' BMW, keep the 100 horses and give me the 6 any day of the week.
Never knew these existed. D2 Audi S8 with a manual gearbox, have never seen one in the UK so assume it was a LHD-only offering.

Nice. Definitely a manuel. Always good to have a system failure message on the dash when you take pictures for the ad. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1248690
