Snap - my first car was an Ascona B 2.0S in ochre yellow - like this...

Great cars! I think mine was a DS or D? mostly red, primered front wings and a full length webasto.

I was offered a beautiful green Ascona Berlinetta for sensible money but it had a slight gearbox issue where it sporadically jumped out of gear: I'd only recently fitted a new clutch to my brother's Mk2 Capri 2.0S on the side of the road, I had to do an engine swap on my Ascona straight after I bought it and I could not face getting under another car for a while.

I was an idiot.

I took this snap at the 'ring in 2019 at a TF day. Was on Cup2s and being driven properly, I would have loved to know its provenance.

My eagle eye spots a very small difference - the rear lens. In one they are grey and the other orange. So is this one car or 2? Is one a genuine racer and one a looky likey?
EDIT

Just realised one has centre locks and one does not.

Yeah I'd say most people's first thought would be that it's a heavily modified 190/cossie with a Evo 2 bodykit.

The most amazing stuff can turn up at Nurburg so who knows, it might be a genuine Evo 2 stripped and caged, or (less likely) an ex-DTM converted to road use.

Whilst we're on a slight deviation of DTM cars... The Alfa 155 was my favourite

This was what I had in mind

I've got the M635 looking quite nice now but perhaps that's what I should do with my spare...idea

That sounds entirely like a great idea!
What's the other one out of interest? An M635csi I'm familiar with and love how they drive, how does the other compare if you don't mind me asking?

This beats the 190 because it is Italian and Red - just how I like my wine.

Meanwhile, sparked by that E30 estate a few pages back and what other options exist for a compact, light, 4-seat car that can take some track day fun.
Sapphire RS Cosworth in 2WD form? I'm pretty sure this is a 2WD model even through the ad claims 4WD.

ETA: I like this game. biggrin

E36 M3 Evo

The brave choice: Maserati Quattroporte Evoluzione

And of course E28, E34 or E39 M5. smile

Many years ago I almost bought a track day special Alfa 75 V6 with a mate of mine. I seem to recall it wasn’t road legal anymore due to the changes, but he had a trailer. Total price was something like £4500 including a load of spares, but it never happened unfortunately in the end

1990 could be very last of the 2s, or first of the 4s.

Plate check comes back as a 4x4.

Alas, parking a Ford Cossie on the street in London is likely only marginally less risky than 30 years ago!

Although that has just reminded me there's an Escort Cossie tucked away in a garage nearby that I see from time to time. cool

The other one is a very, very early (rhd car 57) series 2 1982 635CSi. It was ordered as an automatic but with the optional Recaro seats, AC and the 25% LSD ??!!

Being so early it means it only has the three speed auto - I bought the car about 25 years ago with the full intention (which I still hold to) that when the gearbox goes wrong I will change it for a manual gearbox to better the sporting intention set out by the LSD and the Recaro seats.

It has never missed a gear let alone gone wrong.

To drive right now they are chalk and cheese - but that is down to condition rather than specification. The M635 was restored a few years ago and is (after getting rid of the rust in an E24) a garage queen. It also benefits from no holds bared skills from my 'The Man' who has whizzed around steering, suspension, cooling system and setting the tappets to make it a joy to drive and the engine a marvel to listen too - it is quite simply fabulous.

The 635 in contrast needs a little TLC - I haven't driven it enough and used it enough but when I last did it still lifts its skirts well enough with oddly the same speed to rpm as the M635 even with only three gears?! My Alpina addiction has left it at the bottom of the pecking order despite its 25 years with me and I do keep saying I ought to try and find it a new home or throw money at it. Over the years it has accrued various ///M bits to make it look like a pre-Highline M635 namely the steering wheel, front and rear spoilers and the body coloured wheel arch extensions.

In good form the 635 is stiil a nice car to drive but the jewel of the M635 is the engine - it simply sings as it revs and is addictive enough to want to hear it every day. The case for the 635 though grows stronger with every day that passes now I'm in the South East - auto gearbox for all the jams, 40 years old so no tax and no MoT, seemingly indestructible M30 and gearbox that will last another 40 years, and a car shape striking enough to be let out of every junction despite the BMW badge.

Thank you for that thumbup

So it sounds like if you were without the others the two car duo of the E24s would be an ideal arrangement. smile

My older brother had an M635 when I had an E30 M3 and on occasion I would borrow the 6 for the engine (it had a slightly fruitier pipe, was a smidge stiffened and road on compromotive split rims) and I loved it. It just seemed to have so much range and going up through the gears on the commute from Hockliffe to Milton Keynes on the A5 many a moon ago was the highlight of the day.
