So far and nobody mentioned the immense arse, which gives birth to a 991...?
Yep, I did!

Never seen the car throttle picture though, very good!

I couldn't buy a 1.5 litre engine that's done 50K miles for £40K. Its a highly stressed engine probably used to the limit of its ability
The 1970's called, they want their opinions back......

I suppose all of the new Fiesta ST's will be scrap at £50k miles too lol. Luddites unite

Front and side profiles are pleasing. The rear end however is bloody awful.

I went out in one last year. Very quick but hindered by poor battery performance.
Be prepared for high running costs too.

High running costs compared to a Fiesta or other £100K cars?
Everything in the same price bracket has high running costs, I'd imagine that this has lower than most due to lower fuel and tax bills.

What running costs?? I've had mine for two years and haven't spent a thing on it other than a very limited amount of petrol.
Insurance pretty reasonable and zero Tax too!

I'm seriously considering one of these as my next daily. Would need to get an extended warranty though. So far they seem pretty reliable, but I'm guessing if something does go wrong it won't be cheap.
get an extended warranty and they're fine as a daily, fast, super economical, still look modern and handle nicely

when you bare in mind a new golf gtd is £40k they are an absolute bargain

You are probably right, but in terms of high tech on a consumers scale it is old tech.
Just consider the range on its electric engine, just not enough...
So far electric cars are simply not up to it.

I like them.

Do these need a power point to charge or can they 100% self charge (I live in atop floor flat!)
Me too and when I made an enquiry last year BMW said it would be fine self-charging. Shame they never called me back as promised for the test drive.

These are great cars but always seem to be a purchase made with the head rather than the heart.
If you ignore such dull considerations as fuel and running costs it would be difficult to look past something with more emotional appeal (a Vantage or Evora for instance) to buy one of these.
As a company car, yep, I get it. As some sort of tax reducing transport, get it on the driveway. As something to bond with and polish on a Saturday morning before Sunday's drive to nowhere, not sure.

Its electric only range is better than a lot of other hybrid cars electric only range and certainly comparable.

When you say "Electric cars just aren't up to it" im not sure how relevant that is on this thread as this isn't a thread about an electric car (such as an iPace or Tesla which are most certainly 'up to it' for a very high proportion of car users).

The ad has NO interior pics. I have a feeling that might go some way to explaining the low priced this particular car.
Just google the interior for a 318i se the interiors are very similar on appearance.

Still looks modern to me. When this first came out and BMW were hassling me to test drive one I baulked at it thinking it would look seriously dated in no time at all. Have to say though - it doesn't.

I know what they look like, but the dealer wants £40k+ without showing us what THIS one looks like. I'm guessing its a bit tatty!

ETA, ahhh read page 2 now...

I remember TopGear saying it's a nice car but that's it.
And the i3, i heard it's mileage decreases year after year without another solution than spending more than the car's value in new batteries.

When i see what my 5er costs and how often it breaks down, i dont want to think of what this will cost... Still the i8 is a nice looking car...

"Perhaps this is one to revisit in another five years time"
Perhaps this is one to revisit in another THREE years more like. What do you think the resale value will be when this car is nearing, or has passed, the warranty period? This will make an upmarket diesel look like a good investment.

Still sticking with the fantasy mpg in the specification eh? I hear you get more like 40 to the gallon in the real world. The piffling battery capacity hasn't aged well when compared with Tesla or even the new Nissan Leaf either. Does anyone know if it does over air updates to keep it fresh?

Shame as I genuinely applaud what BMW has tried and, to my mind, failed to achieve.

I’m struggling to understand the “old tech” comments.

It’s a carbon-fibre series production car... Yes maintenance may be a long term issue, like any high-performance car, but corrosion won’t be. Batteries do degrade, but there are Prius’s and Tesla’s with hundreds of thousands of miles on their original batteries. The i8’s electric-only range might have been surpassed, but there’s no overall range anxiety. It’s supposed to be fabulous over a long distance. If I had the money...

Why on earth are you comparing this to an EV like a Leaf or a Tesla?

This is a Hybrid with a short EV only range that is similar to many many other hybrids.
