Am I the only one who thinks these cars are just getting way too powerful? 720bhp in what is traditionally the baby Ferrari, 800 in the big GT. I can't help but feel they need a smaller mid mounted V6 car in the 400-500bhp range with a focus on much lighter curbweights.
I love the Alpine concept of light weight fun over power but I'd prefer something with the atmosphere (if that's the right term) of a Ferrari.
I prefer the 570s over the 720 for example but McLaren are just lacking a bit of soul that Ferrari's have always managed to pull off somehow.
I see exactly where you're coming from. Just think, in 1990 the Lotus Carlton was being slated by certain groups as it had 377bhp and could hit 180mph. Look at the supersaloons now! anything between 500-600bhp. Just crazy nowadays.I love the Alpine concept of light weight fun over power but I'd prefer something with the atmosphere (if that's the right term) of a Ferrari.

Totally agree. Anyone buying this car (or similar) will never be able to `give it the beans` on any UK road. Floor it in second & third and you'll be travelling at silly speeds that will end you up in jail.Nice cars to own and drive, but you'll have more fun in a car with half the power, as at least you can thrash a less powerful car.

Impressive they can get away with face lifting a car twice and calling it a new model!
They have obviously seen how the Golf Gti design has changed over the last few years and copied that Luckily the 458 was such a nice coke bottle starting point. I think they have got away with it again, the rear tail lights being 4 now looks good, will be interesting to see it in the flesh. From reading reports the Pista seemed not as far away from the base 488 than the Speciale was from the 458. So it makes me wonder if this really is now a cheap Pista in effect .... bargain !

I don't think they are trying to "get away" with anything.Whats wrong with evolving existing designs something car makers have done for many years? Porsche for example?
The 458 to 488 was a big change due to the NA to Turbo engine.... Now they are bringing the latest design language to that new platform. I think it works really well.

Looking at the big picture, this isnt just about Ferrari. FCA have a few options to play with, and could just as easily serve that market through the Alfa brand.I love the Alpine concept of light weight fun over power but I'd prefer something with the atmosphere (if that's the right term) of a Ferrari.

When you consider that the Ferrari entry level is now well above your BHP suggestion, I don't think Ferrari will produce something in the 400-500 bhp range ever again, unless it's some kind of badge "engineering" exercise with a smaller brand.
If there was an Alfa 4C replacement coming, I'd think this might fit your suggestion pretty well. Alternatively, if you don't mind letting go of the mid-ship engine requirement, there's a very tasty sedan with around 500 bhp for sale right now.
In the straight on pic the front end has hints of F40 to it. Maybe moving to 720bhp means there’s now room for a ‘Dino’??
Non Ferrari Branded, 500ish bhp, lightweight 2 seater. CF tub shared with Alfa, which they could fit the 2.9 turbo from the Giulia QF ?
Or (more likely) turning the baby Fezza up to 720bhp gives room for whatever Maserati will build to replace the Granturismo...
