Loved the original 917 for its technical innovation.
Fortunately I was present at the 1970 Brands Hatch 100kms race. Got there early trekked out to Hawthorns to see the first lap
WOW Rodriguez-Siffert-Elford in the wet with sky high rooster tails trailing the rear engine cover inches apart trying to out think each other to lead on the first lap. what a sight.
If anyone wants to see a 917 being steered from the rear in the wet, You Tube has the race footage of Rodriguez.

Question do they have a lot of rain in Mexico otherwise how did he learn to drive like that?

If we're up for gratuitous 917 pics, how about these from the garages at Teloché during a mid 70's Le Mans race weekend. Fascinating history here https://newsroom.porsche.com/fallback/en/christoph...

Excellent link there Dapster. The presence of no.23, The Pink Pig, confirms the year as 1971.

Wonderful pics. I love this one of the chassis. How it doesn't collapse under the weight of the engine alone, let alone last 24hrs battering round a circuit is a mystery. A engineering masterpiece albeit clearly from a time the drivers were expendable!

917/30 definitely the second generation Can Am car with closer to 1200 bhp
I was reported that the engine could produce upto 1580hp, but im not sure it ever raced with that output.

For the love of god put the GT2 RS engine in this sell it for 200k. Show Ferrari and Mclaren how it’s done. I would order today!!!

I’m actually a Ferrari fan but this looks sensational.
Sadly, if it did ever go into production, the price would be way in excess of your optimistic £200k. If the price tag was, say, £10m they'd probably still have no problems selling a limited run.

Truly great pics. Love the sheer garden shed nature of it all. Yes I'm entering / have entered old fart status. No, the good old days weren't better. Motor racing however? Too many deaths, but was more exciting on many levels. Hence why I love the Revival, and most modern racing leaves me cold. Nothing to do with the drivers I hasten to add, talent remains.

Boffins with pencils behind their ears, fragile car bodywork being compressed by the flow of air at 200mph down the Mulsanne straight, fans and photographers alike leaning over the Armco to get a better view... very different times, certainly.

I know the McQueen thing has been done to death, but I can't look at a photo of a 917 without hearing Michel Legrand's wonderful soundtrack to 'Le Mans'. The film has its flaws but we'll never see anything like it again.

Nice concept, if out-punched by the original for presence, provenance and desirability for me. The 917 is inimitable - accept no substitute!

Usability be damned hehe
