Last year some utter hit my car whilst it was parked and drove off without leaving any details. I claimed on insurance (first time ever in 10yrs of driving) assuming that the new headlight, paint repairs etc would be prohibitively expensive and this is what insurance is for, on the phone I was explicitly told that this would be going down as a non-fault claim. After getting a ridiculous renewal price and therefore getting a new policy with another company they inform me that my claim hasn't been recorded as non-fault so my details are incorrect, ringing the first one I am told that because they didn't recover any money they record it as a fault claim. If I choose to pay the whole cost of the claim (having already forked out £450 of excess) then I can keep my no claims and have it recorded as non-fault.

From this I have to wonder what the fk they are even there for? Either way I am worse off than if I never bothered reporting the accident in the first place despite it being zero fault of mine. As it stands it looks exactly the same as if I'd gone full GTA and caused a 20 car flaming pileup so I'll be getting quotes to reflect this for years which will doubtless cost me thousands, all because some utter is too incompetent to not hit a large stationary car and too dishonest to own up to it.

I think the lessons to take from this are:
1: Don't bother paying for a decent policy as you can't actually use it, buy the cheapest sttest policy available with a massive excess, the bare minimum to be road legal.
2: Don't claim on it unless the damage is many many thousands of pounds as you'll be worse off
3: If you see someone hit you and run you might as well go full GTA road rage, chase them down and ram them off the road into a tree as it'll have the exact same effect on your future policy costs

In case it wasn't coming across I am fking fuming mad

yup thats how they work.. its a total rip off.

you insure yourself and pay to protect yourself but then get penalized because something you can't control has caused damage to the item you insure.

statistics are great, now that you've claimed fault or no fault you by default become higher risk.

I have had damage to car and decided to repair my self as it was cheaper to do so than claim on insurance.

Insurance is to cover losses you can't afford or wish to absorb yourself (& if taking the minimum, which is just 3rd party no theft, cover a legal requirement).
If you are involved in accidents future insurance costs are likely to rise irrespective of fault.
If costs aren't recovered in full, again future insurance costs are likely to rise.

Not sure what the OP's gripe is, other than being told the wrong info initially. But anyone with a car should know that fault/non fault in insurance terms = recovering outlay from another party / not recovering outlay. This isn't a secret. Car hit by a meteor---fault claim. Run someone over because you're tuning in the radio, but for whatever reason they decide not to claim - non fault. It's always been this way.

As for the £450 x/s, that's the deal you struck with them, so you cannot complain about that. You can buy a standalone policy to reimburse you your excess for not much money, but OP didn't do this.

Insurers are even offering him the chance to repay the claim and keep bonus, very reasonable considering all the admin costs they've had.

And as for "what it even there for", ask the insurers of that idiot who cause the Selby train crash in his Land Rover because he hadn't slept for 2 days. £50m quid claim paid out, in return for a £400 premium.

I doubt that fault or no fault claim would make much difference to your premium. Either way, by claiming (and even by having an incident and not claiming) you are deemed to be a higher risk that someone who had no incidents.

I'm now a driver or named driver on 3 policies so any claim would cost me a lot of extra money in premium for the next few years on all those policies. Hence I try to save money by having a high excess and by not claiming.

Some knuckle dragging, mouth breathing courier bumped into the back of me on the A34.

Open and shut case? Not a chance when it comes to insurance companies, first the chaps insurance company went bust, now the new company who took all of the policies on are playing silly buggers and the chap who crashed into me is claiming they wern't involved or even on the road at the date and time of the accident... even though I have pictures of his Van after hitting my car (my car in the photo too), picture of his insurance policy certificate..oh and a picture of him too!

Oh and I also have dashcam footage....

Legal proceedings have started now FFS... just pay out!!! I mean, how hard can it be? No wonder premiums are so high. So much time wasted, so much dragging of heels and ignoring corespondence just so it all ends up going to legal proceedings at £300 per hour.

Or you can be a young driver, with telematics - All of the same cover you get here, except it gets cancelled if you "speed" - Many friends can attest; Fortunately I'm moving on to a "proper" policy shortly.

Doesn't seem like there is any such thing as a non 50/50 claim now.

I think you mean ‘open-and-shut case’. ‘Cut-and-shut’ refers to a car made from two previously wrecked cars which are welded together to make a one single new car.

Yup, I got a policy from what I though was a premium & prestige specialist.

I had to do all of the leg work for my insurance & accident(x-loosecoins) management company over what should have been a straight forward non fault claim.
If I hadn't spent literally days on the phone between companies doing there work for them I'd have had to swallow 50/50 for someone coming onto my side of the road, hitting me and driving off.

They reported themselves to the police when they saw the damage to their own car. Guess who comes out worst in Merc V's Pug?

Anywhoo, £3k of repairs for a wing mirror to my car, £13k for my courtesy car plus the repairs to the at fault parties car & a claim for my loss of income, all because the walloper who hit me thought he/she could get off with it.

I am not looking forward to renewal time, especially as days after my car was returned to me after the repair some gentlemen arrived at my house at 5am to unburden me of it.

But they aren't. They are dirt cheap. I can't believe how low my insurance. I hardly know anyone paying more that £400. (all in their 40s or 50s) Friends in Norfolk pay about £120.

I only have insurance because I have to. I fiddle the st out of the comparison websites to get the cheapest quote possible. I live in London so I try to put my address as somewhere low risk in the sticks. This year they thought they were clever by asking for proof of address with a utility bill... photoshop fixed that lol. Call it fraud or whatever, I call it winning.

Good for you, i'd be happy paying £400, I would class that as cheap.

Mine is now £800 (from £500 last year) due to my on-going non-fault claim. So yes, I would class that as expensive due to the steep rise.

For reference i'm 29, i've been driving since 17 under a policy in my name and first claim was last year due to bump mentioned in my initial post.

My postcode is in a high risk zone that works against me though.... *sigh*

insurance seems to be cheap when you go over 40 really... plus you live upnorth.

when I insured my first car at 25 in south london I paid 2600/year

down in west sussex and much more powerful/expensive car is 375/year

bit more experience of course.

Not sure if serious, but even if not, fact is for every one complaint about an insurance co not doing what they should do, there's 1000 crooks like this. If you want to moan about high premiums, they are the real reason.

You do see it a lot, I sometimes have a look on traffic police Twitter accounts and you see a lot of cars being seized for false addresses, not worth the risk really. Just had an email with my renewal price, gone up from £700 to £950, time for my annual phone call to ask then to go back to last years price, thanks scammers like the above.

Another question when does insurance stat going down? I'm 24, driving for about 5 years, no claims and driving a sensible diesel Astra (do fairly high miles though). People my age seem to often drive Golf Rs, Leon Cupras, some in 335i. The insurance when I've looked at these is thousands, not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if my peers are just forking out that much.
