The way sales are collapsing, I think it's going to be harder and harder for people who do huge motorway mileages to find decent diesels.

That's why I don't understand them not going the diesel-hybrid route for large SUV type vehicles like the Cayenne. You have the fuel efficiency of the diesel when running the ICE on a motorway etc., but can run on electrickery when in traffic/town etc so no diesel fumes, and nox stuff.
Best of both worlds, and seems a no brainer and common sense, but too many stupid people have demonised diesel overnight.

IMHO, diesel still has a place in larger vehicles at least.

What does this give you over a regular Cayenne, other than more compromises?
I think this is somewhat missing the point though.

You are thinking about this with science and reality in mind. These cars are not aimed at people who need space for a dog.

I can picture the person right now:

40 something executive in a software company in the South East (Not in Central London).
Wife and a kid, she drives a Merc GL, soon to be replaced by a Tesla Model X.
Rolex Submariner, drinks black coffee.
Amateur triathlete, aiming for Ironman at some point.
Used to drive 'sports' cars when he was younger. Likely progression was: XR3i, Clio 16v, E36 M3, 996 911 C2, Audi RS4, BMW M6. Out and out 'sports cars' were being replaced by 'fast GT' as he gets older.
Always craved performance, a 'badge' and some levels of practicality for his gym bag and newly arrived baby 10 years ago
Now getting older, sore back from the triathalons.

So... wants a badge, wants fast GT, wants some practicality but not a big SUV (Wife has that), sore back means he doesn't want to get into lower slung cars these days, wants nice handling, speed but also comfort for those long shleps up the motorway for meetings in Manchester.

That's exactly who these Coupe / SUV things are aimed at. It matters not a jot that there is a bit less headroom or less cargo space in the back.

Send his name to Porsche and er, that may as well send the rest back.

Simple solution - he needs to quit triathalons, no more back pain & can buy a sports car.

Slopes no more than a Tesla model x. That doesn’t get much stick.

I have a number of Porsches including a Panamera ST Turbo and a Cayenne, and have some sense of the illogicality of why people buy. In the case of the Panamera there is no logical reason to pay a fair sized premium over an AMG C63 which was equivalent performance and far better carrying capacity for instance. I just prefer the appearance of the Panamera and also the interior. So much for being a purist.

In the case of the Cayenne it was and is a working car with tons of miles towing other cars, offroading, winter driving and so on and there was actually some logic to buying that.

However the Cayenne "coupé" mystifies me because it offers no advantages over the normal Cayenne, I think it looks ungainly with a sporting roof and the high stance. Mismatched.

I read a recent article that suggested that the boom in the CUV category is because people prefer the entrance and exit, and those who are old or not flexible have a much better time getting in and out. This might have something to do with it.The Panamera for example has a low roof and short doors - I have to crane my neck to get in.

in the end I just hate the way this thing looks and that's good enough. Of course, I recall buying cars when they came out that everyone thought were fright pigs ( 645ci and E63 M6 for example) and it did not stop me.

So it will be a huge success.

But why the silly coupe though, just by a Cayenne?

I was looking at X5/Cayenne/Q7 for the reasons you state, at 50+ my spine is not in good shape and entry and exit from my BMW 135i was getting very undignified and painful. I still have the odd pain of regret at passing up the Cayenne over the X5, but having chose the X5 for various reasons, at no point did I consider the X6 instead, which to me would have been bloody pointless.

Order has gone in for a black / black Turbo to replace an X5 M. Of course this is an emotional rather than logical purchase, but the want factor is very high. I’ve loved fast SUVs since I first saw an AMG M class 20ish years ago. I had one of the original Cayenne Turbos - loved that. Love the looks of the Q8 and the Urus and at some level this is the Porsche version of that. On any rational level a car like this can never be justified, but the engineering will be epic.

Just wish I had the b*lls to order Lava Orange.

I think it's quite funny that Porsche (and Lamborghini etc.) don't want to be building SUVs.

Why? Because they keep reverse engineering them to be everything an SUV isn't and trying to be sports cars...

They must think "why are people buying these things!" (In a German accent).

Right, we have to have a lower centre of gravity we need less body roll, we will lower it a bit more, oh wait it looks like a hippo, ok, we'all sheer off the arse to make it look like a coupe, oh wait we need to lighten it as it's a heavy fker, oh dear there's less interior space, we should have just made a hatchback or a saloon, oh no these idiots want a high up trolley, but we're Porsche we don't make trolleys, aaaarghh!

I don’t know why either...I looked at one last week yikesn That said I like the Cayenne boxedin Wouldn’t buy one though as our current Cayenne gets used to capacity....roof box going on this afternoon ahead of a two week road holiday in Europe when it will be full to the brim.

That thing is not attractive!
It'd take the new F Pace SVR over that any day!... and pocket the £25K difference too!

Wow, what an insightful comment, not at all cliche.

Thanks.

It did look reasonably practical though, the driver (I suspect not the owner, rather a Porsche employee) appeared to get quite a lot in the boot.

Velar for me.

Shame the Velar is such a munter from the front. Looks lovely otherwise.

It’s a shame the way it looks (to me anyway from the pictures) as it’s shaped more like a big Macan and should look great.
