10 min difference over 12 miles without going over 60? Did you used to stop for a nap in the diesel?
Not quite! The trip is essentially a mixture of windy B roads and a very twisty A road - and there are literally only 3 to 4 possible places to pass - none of which are possible in a 2 litre Audi A6 auto diesel estate barge! There is always one double decker bus and a school coach en route - and the odd tractor. None of these presented a problem to the Lotus but I seriously scared myself a few times trying in the Audi! And even without the obstacles - on a twisty road the Audi wouldn’t see which way the Lotus went - I’ve had many a BMW 2.0D ‘sports’ disappear in my rear mirror!

I am in my 40s and often prefer a SUV shape car to an estate as I can fit 2 enduro mountain bikes upright at the back (not possible in an estate) and take it to places where my A4 Avant would simply not have enough clearance / travel to reach. The SUV is also shorter, more practical and pleasant to drive on its balloon tyres and softer suspensions for family and touring use (I don't take it on track days). It's also cheaper than an equivalent estate. because of the better residuals. I have no issues with anyone preferring an estate so I don't know why you seem so upset.
Why do bikes need to be upright in the car?Weird justification. You must be in the 2% of owners who actually go off-road further than a pavement

So does that mean that they shouldnt buy an SUV?
Not at all - my wife insists on an SUV because she likes the high driving position- it just seems at odds with 90% of the ads for these vehicles constantly referencing adventure sports and off road abilities- when 90% of the buyers are yummy mummies of blokes ‘ of the lager girth’ with dodgy backs!Wiltshire Lad said:

It always amuses me that every SUV ad features Mountain bikes, surf boards etc - and yet 90% of the drivers I see (talking to you Range Rover owners!) look like they couldn’t run for the bus.....
You've got to try and igone the marketing and stop counting drivers / record statistics ;-).The image and marketing of SUVs doesn't affect the end product functionnaly so I am still going to enjoy it for what it is.
Besides, some of the roads where I live are very close to off roading (Lavant village, I'm looking at you) so I would contest the 90% thing. Tall sidewalls and longer suspension travel seem ideal for our "roads".
