I fully agree, and that's part of the appeal. We all love the whimsical and aspirational, but we also run these things as dailies so they need to work. The knowledge and opinion here helps de-risk the leap into the unknown.I think it's inevitable that the cars we see here that are in budget, in spirit and which meet our expectations will change over time. That's probably a good thing too; I love an old Mercedes but even I get sick of seeing the same old models getting posted over and over.
Can't wait to see a plethora of E60 adverts posted and the resulting comments about how they've aged well and Bangle was a design genius

Interestingly, I just watched this auction end just now on a Jag XJ8 4.0' only 45k miles on the clock, honest sounding ad from someone who sounds like they're into their cars and with only a couple of fairly minor sounding niggles.
It was allowed to find its own true value by being sold and did sell, unlike probably 99% of the speculatively priced rash of nonsense that we're currently plagued by, in a No Reserve Auction.
Take a look at what it made. This reality. Not a £18,000 E30 318is or even a £10,000 shed of a W124 Saloon:

I think a shift in the fayre seen in this thread will change by default and through natural causes.
I think this will all just happen on its own because this has always been "The £1-5K Smoker Barge Thread"
This thread has an edge of ruthless realism to it. It's always been mainly about knowledgeable Beards sharing their knowledge and knowing what is a good car (of any make ),what still remains a good car and yet is now a fraction of that car's cost compared with new.
I've got a horrible feeling we're going to see a firm shift towards diesel very shortly (if, indeed, it's not happening already). I think this will all just happen on its own because this has always been "The £1-5K Smoker Barge Thread"

We all know diesel is the devil incarnate... but as the general public never looked beyond mpg figures, the tragically crashing depreciation of low-mpg petrol cars has kept us clever lot in very nice metal for a long time.
But between little but diesels being sold for the last decade or so, and the current demonification of the same, I suspect a lot of us will find ourselves pretty much having to buy a 'orrible clattery engine to continue to find the the space, toys, and luxury we're used to finding behind a big petrol lump.
On the plus side, our smoker barges will be even smokier

I've never owned a diesel car so far.

phil_cardiff is bang on the money with his astute and well-judged comments on the beauty and desirability of the SC430 and leg-end too.

Apologies not entirely barge related but won't get many answers in the Camping forum.
Anybody live in/near Camarthen ?
There's 2 campervans for sale (one in the next village) but it's a 9 hour round trip for me.
That is the true essence of this thread! Reaching-out (sorry) to unknown losers about random st, confident in the knowledge that you're likely to get help from a decent sort. Good luck. I'm getting more interested in campers myself actually. Anybody live in/near Camarthen ?

I actually think its time is now. The estate (e61) is especially handsome I think, and considerably better (externally) than the e39. There, I've said it. Heresy in the new thread.
I find myself sometimes thinking E60s are looking good value, but I always remember that whilst an E39 is a lovely environment to spend time, the interior of an E60 just isn't.
Much like the E39 is the default choice over a 210 for me, the 211 always beats the E60.

Another phenomenon that I've noticed of late is the current plague, not of ladybirds, but of 'Barn Finds'.
That did actually used to mean that and you'd see literally maybe a handful per year being advertised as such. Now it has become synonymous with and attached to every piece of rotten and neglected ste.
Britain actually doesn't contain enough barns for this description to tally up.
New Volume Resolution No.2:
Any c$nt who describes their car in the advert as a "Barn Find" gets an instant back-button ignore from me from now on. They're not worth wasting further reading time .
Agreed- is this, as I suspect, some sort of social media contagion? That did actually used to mean that and you'd see literally maybe a handful per year being advertised as such. Now it has become synonymous with and attached to every piece of rotten and neglected ste.

Same but have you seen the price of the ruddy things? Just doesn't compute to me at all. derin100 said:
Be careful CdG...you are getting perilously close to 10K posts. Do you really want the auspicious landmark of your 10,000th post to be marked by a comment relating to caravan sites or portable chemical toilets?
Crikey, you're right. I should go all r129sl and set-up an artfully-contrived and carefully-planned screen shot of a post of wonder. Instead, I shall probably dribble-on about orange men in naff sportscars or the challenge of sluicing a camp-site st out of my caravan with an engine. Thanks for the warning!Actually, what I should do is get a life.
