Even with those miles £3k for an ugly, thirsty, deeply unfashionable, not very fast, 22 year old Toyota Ghia seems “a bit steep”.
Yes, but it'll still be working when hell freezes over??

Styled by Giugiaro, or was it Bertone?? They look OK on the bigger Sport spec. wheels.

Not an object of desire, but neither is an LS400 and they get enough love around here.....
Giugiaro, and Wikipedia says part of the design brief was to reduce the amount of body ornamentation seen on Japanese prestige saloons and to take cues from the styling of the LS400 and Soarer. Wikipedia also says double wishbones front and back and at one stage of production the shells only had 8 welds performed by humans.

This must be a thing. I've not browsed used cars for a few years but saw this the other day.

I see your leggy Volvo and raise you....

You can play guess the car if you like.
(not in thread budget)
It’s an E-Class.

And there’s something wrong with these people.

yes

It's carpet, not a lawn. It's bad enough even then.

There seem to be loads of pretty worthy barges for sale on the 'Bay at the moment. Here are a few of my faves:

This looks very original and I love the lack of leather:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-1992-Mercedes-w140...redfaceUQAAOSwvuhc9lRK

Maybe not a barge, but I can't remember the last time I saw one on the road. Good price too

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-480-ES-47-000-MIL...

This looks resplendent

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-W123-280E...

Handsome looking thing, even in boring silver

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-04-MERCEDES-BENZ-E...

Or for an older school estate feel - this looks super

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-Mercedes-300TD-Tur...

And finally, how achingly cool is this:

Much the same i think - I’ve just bought a Jag specific one, so my barely used old one is available if of interest

Is there a preferred Merc compatible one?

I use one of the bluetooth ones - it was about a tenner - and the Torque app on an android tablet/phone.

Cheap and works well.

Edit: Thye're even cheaper now: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ELM327-Bluetooth-V1-5-W...

You have a very good eye old fruit.

I'm really struggling to find a reason not to buy that Lancia. LHD isn't too daft for my circumstances right now, and if it genuinely isn't rusty that has to be a rare beast.

That's quite clever. Interesting, thanks.

It's for the E39. I don't think the W140 uses ODB2, at least the garage uses a round connector under the bonnet on mine

Is yours the one you linked?

This must have been a personal import from the Continent - it doesn't have a rev counter which was standard in the UK.

Personally importing cars from The Netherlands and Germany was all the rage in the early 1980s since cars were MUCH cheaper on the Continent at that time. My father took advantage of this buying a car in Germany, also in 1982. He saved several thousand pounds - and we got to enjoy a mini break over there to boot. I remember coming back on 'Z' plates through Harwich having sailed on the Prinz Oberon ferry. It was a big ship and as a child I was most impressed with it.
Personal importing died out when the EU forced manufacturers to adopt mainland European pricing for cars in the UK, dropping the price of UK cars substantially. A little bit of living history - this old Merc is not just rare because of the manual 'box. The first owner must have really wanted a manual since automatic transmission was a no-cost option on the 280E.

This one again... still not sold.

Someone picked out the faults with it before, from the images... but I can't recall what they were.

You can get an OBD2 to 38 pin adaptor from eBay for a couple of quid - I use it on my similar age SL without any problems.

Afternoon all. I have a thread running in Readers' Cars about my family Mercedes 190e - some posters have suggested that I post it here. It's a top barge!

awep, your car looks great after the detail. There are quite a few of us who have 190s here. They are a fantastic mini barge. Here’s my 2.6:

How do you find the manual gearbox?

I have a family friend who now has quite painful arthritis. He’s a BMW nut (he has a little collection including an e28 M535, an e30 etc) but would like a daily that doesn’t require bending down. He is downhearted and is thinking Rav4.

I know Derin rates his X3 - what would we recommend? Thinking petrol 3.0 SE is a good idea (and replace the run flat tyres). I seem to remember that there were years/specs when the x3 was a lot better. Any advice welcome (including just go for a Rav 4!).

Are there any other higher up cars to consider?

eBay says not available. Perhaps the fault is that you should have bought it!!!

Or, if he’s pulled the add, maybe worth waving low amounts of green in his general direction.
