At least our little Touring 442-inspired deviation has helped flush out some of the other thread pervs, finally confessing their love for the Golf Club Special. Embrace it chaps, you know you want to!

The risk is that I might actually have to buy one to put my money where my mouth is, and I really want a very non-barge-like Lotus Evora; maybe I should replace the LS430 with an SC and get an Evora too, but that really would be perverse even by thread standards.
I had an Evora S. The ride quality was astounding, incredible handling (as you would expect). The S variant drank fuel for no real benefit over the non supercharged.

The interior was terrible quality, and the boot filled up with a foot of water every time it rained.

I loved it.

P38 question,

Presumably, when faced with a list of advisories like this the correct answer is to walk away, or get Very good at welding, or just slap a load of underseal on and hope for the best a la what th vendor is blatantly going to do? It's £950 for a 4.6 in not fine nick, but...

- Front Power steering pipe/hose slightly corroded (2.1.5 (g) (i))
- Front Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))
- corrosion through out chassis
- Central Rear Tow bar cross member corroded
- Nearside side steps support corroded
Offside side step supports corroded
Sounds like a picky tester to me. Rocket cover gaskets need doing every 2yrs or they leak oil. Nothing major. The side steps are made from he cheapest steel ever and are all shot underneath now - simply remove. Pipes slightly corroded - as expected at this age unless it’s a W126.
Rear tow bar cross member - mine was like that and I had to take easy remedial repair action.

I’ve been there. Rust is not an issue on a P38 - I actually think they were the first non rusty LR product made.

It’s all of the other stuff that wouldn’t flag in an MOT that you should be worried about!
I would agree. Sidesteps are bolt on "accessories" for fat landlords. Rear cross member is easily sorted.
It's the 3,000 electrical gremlins which are currently hibernating you need to watch. biggrin

Joking apart I do think the P38 is finally coming of age. I don't think it will ever be as fondly regarded as the Classic, but it is beginning to look a bit more desirable, especially in a pleasing colour scheme.

I like the thread positive responses about the P38. The specimen vehicle was advertised with a popped suspension airbag, so I've asked if that was done or is something additional to do. No reply yet.

The Crown Athlete is an odd one. In a 300bhp/ton type response, I think the wallow, hideous interior and reddy-brownness of this Explorer is quite charming. Less to go wrong than a P38 I suspect. £895 too.

A rather nice Toyota Crown Athlete estate just under half a bag over thread budget.

I always thought the idea with cut'n'shuts was to weld the front half of one car to the back half of another... Think that's the first one I've seen using the horizontal axis! (I'm not entirely convinced they were the same make/model, either smile )

This looks like a decent Lexus. Should be good for a few years of hassle free motoring...

That does look good. Does 5+ owners seems a little high for a car like this? The rear console has more buttons than mine so I am mildly envious.

This interior in a much darker car would be fantastic, but I'm not sure it works that well here:

Still, at 3 grand that looks a terrific barge buy - good spot.
15+ years old...new owner every 3 years, doesn't seem too bad?

I agree that a lighter interior works better with a darker exterior but at £3250 that's stonking value.

I just can’t get my head around LPG and losing half the boot space.
The LPG tank is probably in the spare wheel well.

A very smart but boring car like that which costs just £5k to buy but which drains you of £3k a year in just tax and fuel is a tough sell. The chap with a tolerance for those kinds of running costs almost certainly is prepared to spend more on buying a fresher car.

The same car costing you under £2000 to run looks a better proposition, IMO.

With 388bhp and a good quality conversion, the change between fuels will be completely imperceptible.

A GT car rather than a barge, but this appears to me to be extremely cheap for what it is...

Sweepstake on when the first of these enters thread budget? (In fact, we should run similar sweepstakes on quite a few future barges...)

A little over thread budget but what a colour, and matching hub caps, lovely.

That's great value for £895, traded in our Freelander for a SLK280 at the weekend, as the 166 & V8V are not to be used for dog / tip, winter duties, that looks just the ticket, shame it is the other side of the world from me though.

ETA running insurance quotes (damn being young-ish), probably need it - £299 p.a., plus what, £300 tax?

It's looking like XK (non-R) have found a bit of a resistance point at about £8k. I've been keeping a gimlet eye on them for a long time.

Never seen one less than £8k and that was at a scrapyard. They do rust however in some nasty places necessitating big money fixes, and 100k service can throw up some enormous bills (trust me i know) on top of service (VVT, supercharger service, suspension bushes, auto box fluid flush and refill etc).
Many appear to be sold before that huge 100k/ 10 year service interval...

Fab cars though, looking for another one although north of this thread's budget.

Here's mine:

They are glorious things and I love mine. I had the 100,000 miles service a few weeks ago, it cost around £525 including plugs and replacement of the auxiliary drive belt.

Coincidentally I did a 'WBAC' search last night and they will pay £6000 for it. Of course, I would hope to do a lot better privately, but it was still a shocker.
