Within a month of picking up my 190e (paid £2k) I had the following done:
Undersealed and any underside surface rust removed. Particular attention paid to subframes.
New springs all round.
All new brake discs and pads all round and calipers at the rear.
All that was just under £2000.
I've since replaced the coolant temperature switch and had the coolant flushed. I also am having the rear screen removed and corrosion fixed as it's letting water in the boot.
No idea what will happen at the MOT come April. It passed this year before my ownership but if you had seen the state of the brakes you'd wonder how. Not going to do too much more till then if I can get away with it.
Granted it's not cosmetic. Totally love the car though. It's brilliant. Front end respray is something I'd consider next summer.
Also 4k in seems to be still cheaper than a well sorted one:Undersealed and any underside surface rust removed. Particular attention paid to subframes.

Are you ignoring niggles though or did you buy a mint example ;-)0a said:
Unusually for me I bought a pretty mint example. It's in unreasonably good condition. I just turned over 77k miles. The one thing I have had done is to replace the tyres - they were from 2008 (but like new in appearance).
It looks lovely. The benefits of spending the extra cash on a well sorted one!Integroo said:

There are a few things that need doing - but 5k miles in I now know what they are! The car is a little clunky on rough ground - so I will do the r129sl full refresh. The front wings and bonnet have had paint. Not bad but not the best, and the wings were not adjusted perfectly when put back.
The interior is as new. It's MB Tex which I thought I would dislike (the one part of the car which put me off it), but is actually fine. The driver's seat looks like the passenger seat which looks like the rear seats. It would require tenfold the miles for any bolster wear!
I am a massive 80s/90s merc fan, and also have a 190 2.6 and a 500SL. As a daily driver, the W124 is just the best. This one is pretty loaded equipment wise, so it makes for a good regular use car.

Threadists...
It could do with a machine polish to bring the paint back to life - 400 to 600?
If anyone can get away with charging £400 - £600 for a mop and polish, I'm taking up in valeting. It could do with a machine polish to bring the paint back to life - 400 to 600?
Two cars per day would be a cinch, even for an old knacker like me.
I've got my own rotary polishing machine and the usual G3, G10 and Bilt Hamber Speed Wax.
It's really not that difficult, honestly. Give it a go!
Proper detailing is another conversation - not one I'm interested in, to be honest - and I do appreciate the work some of these 'detail' guys do.
Maybe when you buy a McLaren F1, give it a shot.
Spending £400 - £600 to get your new car looking super-shiny is madness.

Agreed for now, it's just the paint is such a lovely colour, but quite swirled and dull - it would be gorgeous after a machine polish! I think 600 quid would get you a "stage 2 detail" whatever that means...Two cars per day would be a cinch, even for an old knacker like me.

Maybe I should give it a go myself ...
I'd forgotten how difficult it is to get around by public transport on bank holiday weekends - you know, the time when people need to travel and so they close all the railways down.
Anyway, gratuitous petrol station shot:
I'm not certain about the alloys, I think I'd prefer the original 16 inch ones with more tyre. That may well be the first thing I'll do with it, after getting the front top suspension bushes done which are unseemingly noisy currently. And a wash, obviously.

That is the quintessential barge. Very nice.Anyway, gratuitous petrol station shot:

That generation of Jaguar really is the Barge shape, in my opinion. That looks lovely. Anyway, gratuitous petrol station shot:

£600 would give you all you needed to get stuck in - and then at least £500 left over to spend on other stuff.Maybe I should give it a go myself ...
And then you'd have the machine and polishes/materials for the next one.
Checkout YouTube, there's a million and one tutorials.
Get a decent claybar and lube spray. Proper cutting compounds and decent polishes/wax.
Get in there! The 156 is a byott of a car, it'll look the biz when you're done.
