I mean... sure, it's not the best tool for track days or attacking twisty lanes, but I've been in a 900bhp RS6 and generic and unexciting it was not.

Not sure I understand all this.

If you want a lightweight sports car, buy a Lotus.

If you want precision handling buy a 911.

If you want more space but still to hang the back out a bit buy an M5 or a 63 AMG.

If you want to take your family and the dog away at weekends but also have a bit of fun and the ability to hoon in total safety buy an RS6.

If you are worried about low profile tyres then order it with 19s or go buy some.

My RS6 is on Air not DRC and as a result I think is best of all worlds. I have other metal for precision/lightness/corners. But for everyday use on varying roads when I have my (admittedly almost adult) kids in the car the RS6 beats all of them. In the end you cannot beat a V8 burble.

Horses for courses, no?

And buy a new one after 2020, it'll be the quickest way to get to 70mph.

I think even air suspension will find it hard to make that a smooth ride on UK roads...

Can I ask what would the PH response be if Audi had said:

Here is the new RS6, it weighs 150kg less and only has 500bhp, 103bhp down on the old model as we are no longer chasing horsepower figures.

The reality is the new models are bigger, quieter, more powerful, more economical and have more toys than the old ones, since this is what people seem to want to buy. They also seem to slap more and more stupid alloys on but that is another issue ;-)

PS love the earlier comment about fastest car to 70 in 2022. What a disaster!

Increasing power by 10% is a much simpler and far cheaper engineering solution to making a car faster than reducing weight by 10% (while maintaining rigidity and safety).

Given that 99% of Audi A6s are 2lt tdi, with sportsline kit, weight reduction would be totally wasted on the consumer, yet its cost would be reflected in higher sticker price for all.

Ultimately the RS6 is still an A6, so it will never chase the lower weight / more "driver feel" market.

As for those tyres & wheel combos... pot holes and narrow country lanes with "bumpy" edges, no thanks for me.
The wheels need to get larger to proportionalise the obese stature of the rest of the car!!

That is another reason to buy an RS6. It costs Audi a lot more to make it than they charge you for.

As a result of the RS6 halo they sell many many TDis with S-Line badges and BIG WHEELS !!! etc.

I own a remapped C6 RS6 (V10) which puts out more than 650hp and I can tell you it is a LOT of fun!

Nothing really beats it in terms of safe overtaking and "making progress"

Pretty sure both statements are incorrect.

I bet they make plenty of money on every RS6 they sell. Standard architecture / parts pool, 1000s sold and high sticker price guarantees that.

TDis with big wheels sell themselves on their own merit: Audi badge, good economy and nice looking inside and out - that is what sells the S-line Audi - Not people thinking they are getting a cut price RS6 or even product association.

As expected, yet another reasonably rapid (in a straight line) but overpriced and true to form soporific Audi with disconnected steering.

Yawn.

the current C7 came in >100kg lighter than the C6 RS6 largely due to use of aluminium vs steel in the chassis, with a smaller capacity engine and less horsepower (marginally) until the Plus version was released (due to a remap mostly) so circa 5% lighter, but the benefit is across the whole platform. Dynamically the C7 is miles ahead of the older model, as one would expect, and one would hope this continues to be the case for the incoming C8 version.

But as mentioned in a prior post by others, this is a day-to-day, do it all family car for which it is one of the best on the market

On a recent camping trip to the Lake District in my Stage 2 C6 (well over 700hp) I cant think of a better car for the job.

If you want to fill up the back with gear/bikes/boards, get anywhere fast without putting yourself backwards through a hedge, it is the car of choice.

I love mine.

On any journey in the UK, you would struggle to lose an enthusiastically-driven 3.0 TDi, though of course you could leave longer black stripes at the traffic lights.

I always say I wish I’d been a teenager in 50’s America, when things seemed pretty carefree (ok apart from the odd war, and nuclear arms race....), where the roads were wide open and cars had stupidly big engines.
All of the ‘save The shrimp, save the Morris Minor’ types have been trying to emasculate us for years, and yet it’s the bloody EU (and being a simple soul so don’t see why we have to do what they say when or if we leave) who are mandating that all new vehicles will have governors from 2022 (or was it 2020, I raged that much I might have misheard)
Which then begs the question, will we still be able to enjoy cars like this, and will manufacturers still make them?
I for one hope so.
But a second thought.
If these governors are implemented to reduce casualties and RTAs, will insurance premiums come down as presumably they won’t have to pay out as often or as much, and speed should be less of a factor...
Think I’ll ditch this sthole of a country as soon as I have the funds and burn my hydrocarbons in the good ole US of A, where the motorist isn’t as fettered and controlled.

This is true my 7 is on air suspension and it's perfect until you hit a pothole and then it goes to pieces 20" wheels and 35 profile RFT see to that.

I thought that I had accidentally clicked onto mumsnet with most of these responses not PistonHeads , it’s a laugh out loud quick dog chariot / tip runs . The one that I tried just did exactly that it made me laugh due to the sheer Jekyll and Hyde nature from cruising effortlessly and in comfort ( on the optional big wheels too ) on that oh so smooth A96 , to trying to head but the horizon between corners on the Banchory to fettercairn road .

I am guessing that some of PistonHeads have no love for fast estates anymore judging by these comments?
