Traveling To Buy A Car
Discussion
A flight from West Yorkshire to Cornwall to buy an E34 BMW M5 Touring.
A one way train ticket from the Wirral to Dover to buy an E34 Alpina B10 4.6 Touring.
Two flights from Manchester to Aberdeen to buy an Alpina B12 5.7 Limousine; on getting off the first flight the seller picked me up in the car which promptly went into limp mode. A friend of his was passing and, there being no flights back, dropped me off at the railway station. On getting home the seller offered to refund my costs and did so. Six weeks later he'd had the car fixed and I was offered it again - I accepted and flew up a second time and drove straight home in the car.

Just had a chap fly from London to Scotland to to buy my £650 2002 Toyota Avensis. I was wondering if it was a wind up and I'd be stood at Glasgow arrivals like a plum. But he was genuine and nice bloke to boot.
Good effort for a shed!Bikes, but I've done Bristol to Norwich and up to Sheffield before. No bother as long as you can judge the seller and the car from a distance.
Devon to Glasgow for a Fiat Doblo. Went via London and caught the sleeper from Euston.
Devon to Leeds for a Saab 93 estate, Devon to Warrington for a Citrown C5 estate. Devon to Accrington for a Chrysler Voyager, Devon to Skipton for a Renault Megane...
All taxis. All bought from the advert and a quick phone call. All are/have been brilliant and served me well.

Used to rally Talbot Sunbeams so a few long trips involved.
Bristol to Sheffield and back for one, Machynlleth for another and Pwllheli for another. Trailer for all of them, decent tow car through North Wales/Snowdonia with a light-ish trailer and load is a lovely trip.
All sold up now and the last one was collected by a guy who travelled down via Derby to drop another car off and took it back up to Inverness!

Sold a Toyota Celica ST182 on eBay for £600, bloke won the auction and then rang me to ask for my address. We worked out he was in the arse end of Scotland and he didn’t realise I’m 20min from Dover !!
Fully expecting him to bail out and even offered to cancel the auction for him. He flew down, hoped on a train and bought the car. Drove it home 600 odd miles and messaged me saying how happy he was with the car. Bloody nutter probably spent more on flights, train and fuel than the car cost to buy

For my Aston Martin V8 Vantage, I was flown(!) by the previous owner from my local airport in the Black Forest over to Frankfurt, from where I drove back, through the Black Forest. I'd driven up for the test drive a couple of weeks prior, agreed a price on the spot, then went on holiday for a fortnight. The previous owner flies for a hobby, and flew over with his wife, did a spot of shopping, and took me to the car after work, flying over the autobahn Friday night traffic.
BASF
I drove back through the Black Forest and had a blast. Not sure I'll beat this experience, but who knows.

Newcastle to Kent to buy a VX220 that the seller had been trying to shift for some time
Price agreed beforehand, as was him agreeing to accept a banker's draft (having sent him a screen shot of my bank account)
Get 4 miles from Kent to be told by him via text that he can't let me take the car back with me as he's had second thoughts about the BD
It was a Saturday and the banks were closed. I was absolutely seething on the train on the way back home.

Back in 2000 it was possible to buy UK spec cars in Europe and save a lot of money. I got a deal on an Integra Type R from a dealer in Anderlecht, Belgium. I told a mate about the deal and he ordered one too. Then he told a work colleague who ordered one as well. The three of us set off in a Lhd golf which was being used as a px. Arrived at the dealer to pick up the 3 cars and drove them back home to the UK. We had 2 white ones and a black one. I sold mine after 9 years for not much less than I paid for it.

The crazy thing is the cost of long distance travel is cheap to pick up cars. £56 via BA from LGW to GLA to pick up one car (plus £10 for a National Express Coach to the airport - I was determined to do things cheap in the spirit of Shedding), £22 from Maidstone to Liverpool Street, Cambridge and on to Wymondha. My latest car purchase was Maidstone to Stratford International and Stratford Domestic to Wickford for £34 - a rip off!

Not quite as far but I did Leicester to Kent to view a LY VX220 that supposedly was in great condition. Arrived to be met by the sellers dad, noticed straight away there was front clam damaged and the grille was all pushed in. The dad tried to tell me they're all like that, looked like somebody with a towbar had reversed in to it. Popped the boot lid, lifted it up and was greeted by the boot strut lying in the boot with a huge chunk of the rear clam attached to it. The dad claimed it had just happened that morning. I turned around, drove back to Leics and bought a Calypso Red one 2 miles from my house. Waste of a complete day.Price agreed beforehand, as was him agreeing to accept a banker's draft (having sent him a screen shot of my bank account)
