Traveling To Buy A Car

SW scotland is fine, its up Inverness and north its awful.
The SW probably is, so long as you don't go there in the June/July midge season. I bought a car that was 1st registered in Aberdeen - no wonder most of the underside was a bit crusty!
Which may be why I sold it last year,
Somewhere around the year 2000 I was a poor student in Scotland trying, and largely failing to run performance cars.
My Rover 420 GSi (Don't laugh.) Had expired in the car park of my student halls, so I turned to the internet for its replacement.
As this was the super early days of internet auctions everyone thought I was mad. The car I bought was on Yahoo Auctions, something that was killed by eBay soon after I believe. It was also hundreds of miles away in the East midlands, I was in St Andrews in Scotland at the time.
So, flight from Edinburgh (Or possibly Glasgow) to the East Midlands airport at 5AM, the ticket cost me £15, when I got on the plane I quickly realized I was the only passenger, so a 737 all to myself. After I factored in cabs and paying my mate for petrol to the airport the total traveling cost was £50
All for a Citroen ZX 16v.
It was worth it, I did another 80K miles in it before it finally expired 4 years later

north/south make no difference to corrosion. It's the proximity to the sea that does.
Bullst.Everything from the north of Scotland is rotten. Dont care if its inland or next to the sea, its rotten. We salt the roads for what feels like 4 months of the year and it just eats everything.
dunno about others but suspect like me they wake up on the day of collection treating it like a mini adventure and I always like to build in a bit of time to have a breakfast en route.
this applies if I am travelling distance to buy heavy parts or on the train with a one way ticket.
my current car was bought from Oxford in 2009 and I live in Birmingham so not too far by train-still got the car after 10 happy years.
Have travelled 600 miles in one day on a parts run dropping off and collecting that took in newcastle glasgow and finally preston starting at 3.30am and getting home at 7pm. killer day in saddle. still love those days though.

helping a mate this weekend to take him to collect a car in Bexley, London so thats 240 miles round trip for me but we should enjoy the 2 car convoy on the return leg. again I treat these trips as mini adventures. good chat on the outward leg then do the deal (hopefully the car is as described) then the drive home.
its a bit like Vietnam........if youre a car enthusiast. You dont dont know man.....you arent a petrol head.

I travelled from Halifax to Crowborough in Sussex (I think?) to buy a Celica - had the car delivered the following week.
From Halifax to Cardiff for an Audi TT - drove home in it the same day.
And finally from Leeds to Norf London for a Lexus IS250, I was working for a week in London and drove it home.
All were good cars, worth the trip and time.

Worcester to the Scottish Borders, to buy a BMW 2002, from Elizabeth Marian Frances Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch. Sadly, I did not get to meet her ladyship as the sale was handled by her man. Purchased with a fresh MOT, the back box fell off on, the M6, near Shape.
Sold a couple years later, to Rastafarian in Saint Paul’s, Bristol, to cruise around in with his ladieeze. Paid the full asking price, notes plus coins, thoroughly decent chap to deal with.

Proper undersealing & cavity protection is a must in Scotland, if you intend on using the car all year round.
Either that or be very proactive in giving the underside a hose down at least twice a week.
2 years ago I went down to Warwickshire to buy an old mk1 discovery commercial and drive it back. I was in highland Perthshire at the time. I got the bus in at 6am to the closest train station. Then a 7hr train journey. Picked up the van and headed back with a conservative ETA of 3am. Journey started fine, truck felt good, but going up the M6 I started getting a vibration from the drivers side front which got worse and worse until I couldn’t go on. Had to call the insurer who arranged the breakdown cover. Roadside diagnosis by the mechanic was a shot wheel bearing. Got a lift over to his garage and we sorted out a car for me to carry on my journey. Got home just after 6am and the disco arrived on a flatbed the following day.
