Mad to see the 450bhp V8 petrol S6 be replaced by a 350bhp V6 diesel for our market. Clearly driven by WLTP but more importantly to recognise that Audi had the inability to get the RS4/RS5 engine to operate within the parameters. Shame they didnt put the SQ7 engine in it.

Unless its a cheap lease this would no longer interest me - I was looking forward to this model as well!

So, does that mean the engine for the RS4/RS5 has to change - interesting.............

I love a quick diesel, but what's so special about this? They have the 4.0 V8 diesel that would've been great for this. I'd be really into it if it wasn't an S car, but as an S car it just leaves me a little too cold.
Totally agree. I was disappointed when I saw it wasn't the diesel V8 out of the SQ7.

This doesn't seem to differ a great deal in terms of performance from the previous-gen A6 3.0 BiTDI.

It’s been rumoured for a while now about the S4/5 and S6/7 going Diesel. However I alway assumed they’d use the V8 TDI from the SQ7 in the S6/7 and this V6 TDI in the S4/5. It would keep them far closer to their petrol predecessors in terms of performance.

I wonder what the S4/5 is going to get now then, maybe just the same engine in a lower state of tune? Or maybe they’ll use the 2.0 BiTDI thats been used in various VW’s but upgraded with the electronic compressor.

Imagine a 2.0 TDI S4.....

Those A6 estates are IMO the nicest looking cars available at the moment. Love em.

I think the "bring down average CO2" theory posted above makes a lot of sense.

On another note I'm curious to know what the two black rectangles either side of the four rings logo at the front are?
Sensors - usually for cruise control or city braking type features I believe

but the PH forum said this wouldn't happen, why didn't Audi consult us when planning the future strategy on the engines.....

Why not a V6 petrol with the same tech? Weird choice.
I feel similar - maybe VAG have some spare diesel blocks round the back, they need to get rid of.

Good to see diesel making a fightback. Anyone who thought the engine and car manufacturers would idly sit by and let it die are maybe a bit premature with their wishes.

I personally hope and think diesel will be around for many more years yet, and will continue to reduce emissions to well within EU targets within the next couple of years.

Plenty fast, good response, good looks, good economy, good range, will probably even sound ok. Don't think they sold a lot of petrol S6, barely see them over here, much more RS6, so this might be a perfectly sensible move from Audi.

Great news - Common sense prevails over hype.

Diesels provide real world power delivery and better economy than most petrol hybrids.

Makes sense really. Most who want a performance estate will stump up for the RS's anyway, this just distances the S and the RS. Lovely inside but will no doubt be a bit of a blunt instrument.

This is a very interesting decision.

Previously S6 cars have used the same engine as the RS6 in a lower state of tune, which gave them a certain sense of cool. And about 100bhp more than this.

An S6 as a super fast diesel does make sense, as a fast way to go a long way without filling up. But im not sure this is powerful enough given the M550d exists in europe with 400hp.

The counter is that the Hybrid side will make this more responsive than a heavily turbocharged diesel, so possibly just as quick in the real world.

I just hope it rides and handles properly, unlike most fast audis..

Hmm, two branches of the VAG empire - Porsche and Bentley - have given up on diesel but Audi are forging ahead, and good for them too. Reckon I'll mosey over to the Audi configurator and spec up an S6 Avant. Alas will have to wait for that lottery win to pay for it frown

This has to do with the upcoming Euro 7. Getting more and more difficult for high-performance gasoline engines to fulfill these over-the-top regulations driven by the ongoing economic war against the German auto industry executed by fifth column NGOs and mindless bureaucratic drones.

Quite a few good looking estates about now, the A6, V90 and Superb come to mind.

The "S" family of cars have been dull ever since they started to mainstream the "RS" versions so creating another dull version is not really a surprise to me.

What does surprise me is that a company with an atrocious diesel reputation would release a new product like this at a time when legislation globally is turning against oil burners.

I also question whether and why people still buy VAG diesels? There are some performance figures mentioned in the article but can we really believe any of them?

A6 55TFSI puts out 340bhp this diesel 350bhp - i know torque is way higher but it doesnt create much seperation does it. I would probably take the smooth 55 TFSI or a 50tdi with a tuning box and keep a huge chunk of cash (probably not far off £10k)

They look great but this is pretty weedy for an S6 in my view. The SQ7 engine would have been a much better idea and been more on par with the previous S6 from a power and sound perspective.

I was just about to post the exact same.

This must be the slowest (relative to the other models) S6 ever?

The 55 does 0-62 in 5.1 seconds already.

I knew VW were really struggling on the emissions targets, I just wasn’t expecting such drastic measures as this!!!
