I owned both an C5 A6 2.8 V6 and a B6 A4 3.0 V6 Quattro.

There were few good points; decent interior and they looked alright.

Absolutely dull to drive. Could not go round corners with dead steering - ok if you spend you're time on the motorway but anywhere else they're st. Drank like going out of fashion 17-20mpg. Engine light going on all the time. Parts prices. Expensive servicing. The list goes on.

Why did I buy two Audis? They were cheap..

This generation of A6 hasn’t aged well at all imo and looks much older than it actually is and that rear is gopping.

The C6/A6 variant can occasionally be had for similar money too - a much better deal in my eyes
I was actually thinking the opposite. I reckon this is more handsome than any of its successors. Eye of the beholder, and all that. smile
I really like it. Elegant, understated but with hints of TT.

The dashboard dial set up in this Audi is pretty much perfect - as it is in all BMW till the latest models.
Clear concise information - why are we moving now to stupid graphic displays - the new BMW dials I find awful - or is it just me with my tired and jaded eyes?
That cheap wood looks a bit st though, doesn’t it?

A.mate had the Avant version of this one. He let me take it for a drive.
It felt properly solid and wafted along nicely.
However, it was one of the most boring, lifeless cars I've ever driven. sleep

I agree, but at the time thought it looked very futuristic. I thought the same about the A2 though. laugh

"...be able to run it on cheap classic car insurance." A 2002 Audi diesel?
Eh? It's a petrol.

I agree however that classic car insurance for a 17-year-old car seems unlikely. What's the starting age for a classic policy? 15 years old?
Ad says Petrol, DVLA says Pertol.
It all says petrol, some folk seem to be getting confused by the strapline at the beginning which refers to the new A6 being diesel.
Goes to show what you think you read, I thought it said Diesel, missed the bit about new one being diesel.

My brother in law had one when new with the autobox. Reversing uphill caused it problems, and all sorts of burning smells.
Looked cool as F**k then, but not so much now. The A6 Q 4.2 however.............

Styling is in the eye of the beholder. I much prefer the cleaner look of this gen to the dopey koala nosed mish mash of queues that followed

Better get used to them, dont think car makers will be going for a Steam Punk theme any time soon.
Apart from Pagani.
I did think that as I typed it actually, was interested to see if anyone thought the same so didnt mention it.
Surely the most steam punk of them all is Spyker? And it appears they are still being made....be nice to hear a bit more about them....

I sometimes question PHers real knowledge on cars..

Audi never put the 3.0 V6 TDI in the C5 A6, the biggest you could get is the old 2.5 litre V6.

It is petrol in 3.0 only.

You would know that instantly by looking at this shape of A6 and knowing that it didn't come with a 3.0 TDI.

Stop getting Bond wrong!

Should I go and stand on the naughty step for not knowing every engine that was fitted in every year of every car?

Never driven a 3.0, but in a A4 2.0Tq I've driven away from all sorts of faster stuff in crappy conditions.

Had a 1.9tdi estate version of this and possibly the best car I ever owned.
Best?
Well, it wasn’t THE fastest, or THE most economical, or most spacious but it did everything well. Bloody well
And never ever let me down
I bought it from a close friend who had it from new and being a mechanic he changed the cambelt before selling it to me (saving me £££and some considerable faff)
I’m of the view that the saloon rear end is slightly ‘sad’ looking and that the Avant is better looking, and more practical yet that wouldn’t stop me buying the saloon if it were at the right price...

But a mate had 2.1m skis that went in the boot easily enough on a diagonal.
I must have misunderstood - he got 2.1 metre skis into the boot of an Audi saloon without needing to poke them through into the cabin? That's clearly not true.

I had a '98 2.8 V6 from four to fifteen years old - loved it. Autocar did a group test 'Three of a Wunderkind' with the 5 series and E class - same size, similar powertrains. Both these now look the old-fashioned 3-box last century sheds they were, but this A6 with its futuristic clean styling still looks great, especially the rear. And galvanised. By far the best of the three IMHO. I never bothered to change the cambelt - good design, very long, does little work, so teeth don't get worn.
