This generation of A6 hasn’t aged well at all imo and looks much older than it actually is and that rear is gopping.

The C6/A6 variant can occasionally be had for similar money too - a much better deal in my eyes
Agreed. The rear end of the C5 saloon is awful. I'd either hunt out an avant C5 or as you say a C6 even if that means leggier mileage. I would however shy away from the 2.0TFSI in the C6 as not only did mine suffer from oil pump failure, it was also under powered for the size/weight of vehicle!

I keep getting urges to buy into an C6 S6 Avant.
Funnily enough the smooth rear end was reason I've always had a soft spot for these. I've never owned one though.

I had a '98 2.8 V6 from four to fifteen years old - loved it. Autocar did a group test 'Three of a Wunderkind' with the 5 series and E class - same size, similar powertrains. Both these now look the old-fashioned 3-box last century sheds they were, but this A6 with its futuristic clean styling still looks great, especially the rear. And galvanised. By far the best of the three IMHO. I never bothered to change the cambelt - good design, very long, does little work, so teeth don't get worn.
I only did the cambelt on my V6 80 because the water pump impeller came loose at 122k. Maybe the belt would have lasted a lot longer, perhaps the tensioners wouldn't have.

Glad you liked it but I really cant agree it was far better than an E39 528i, which I believe is the car which won the Autocar test you refer to.

It did, but BMWs are always beloved by the young tester hacks. But not when it snows - and they never consider longevity potential.

|Just bought an Avant version of this myself for similar money. Unloved and nowhere near as clean as the pictured car - but 78K and with £2-300 spent it should be looking as it should.
Enjoying it so far - fantastic build quality and huge amount of space - but should I have bought the A8 ( similar vintage but with a V8) instead?
Only time will tell.

Best looking A6 ever, styled for people with style, unlike the newer versions, styled for people with no style or imagination.

Does anyone have info on prices of these when new?
I'd love to know what I have saved by waiting 16 years to buy my one..

Boring dull car with potential big bills from that 3.0 engine and zf box. This with the PD 150 1.9 engine is a far better bet. With a Revo stage 2 remap and circa 300lb ft would leave this 3.0 petrol in a cloud of blackness, plus up to 50+ mpg and lower tax band. This A6 3.0 is a worthless and unwanted model..

I've dug out a 2002 copy of Autocar

3.0 Quattro SE = 28850
3.0 Quattro Sport = 29750

Auto gearbox was an extra 1400

Thanks for pricing info. I know, massive delay in response - apologies.
I am now 5000 miles in and apart from some new front discs and pads ( £62!!! all in) she has been completely trouble free.
Saw nearly 31 mpg on a run through France but mostly 24mpg in mixed UK driving.
Got Bluetooth for phone and steaming - Amazon about £80 , works fine.
Currently on winter tyres - so really upset by complete lack of snow/ice this winter - sods law!
Exhaust now starting to blow on one side - sounds great , so not in a rush to change.

Looked up the numbers on How many Left - for the 3.0 quattro sport auto there are only 34 Licensed, so pretty rare.
Doesn't make it worth more though - Lol

Still enjoying her - always love a big, lazy engine - never feel the need to rush about.
