RE: The Brave Pill: Range Rover Supercharged
Discussion
I'm just wondering if PH makes contact with the vendor of these car adverts; the one who has paid PH to advertise it before they use the advert in such means?
Essentially 'The Brave Pill' feature completely shreds the vehicle that they are trying to sell and possibly alienates off any potential buyers.
I know if it were my vehicle that was featured in a 'don't buy one of these as they are a wallet hoover' type threads I'd be pretty miffed tbh.

I had a 2006 manufactured one I ran for 18 months. Nothing went wrong except the CD player wouldnt read discs. A later 2010 model I also owned had the same issue. I sold the first car for a £3k profit and the second for a £2k loss. So I think either i was lucky or they aren’t as bad as people say!
I didn't realise the rollover angle was quite so good on these. Seriously though, hats off to you for taking the plunge on one of these and getting away with it, I'm perennially tempted but just don't have the cojones. It's not so much the fact that it'll probably cost a lot to keep running, it's the unpredictability of when it may leave me in the lurch that puts me off.lord trumpton said:

But at the same time pointing the ad out to a truck load of people who wouldn’t have otherwise seen it and perhaps one of them reads the fanboys in the thread and picks up the phone to the seller.... Have an early BMW V8 in the family. Bought it with gearbox replaced and an LPG kit. In the first 15 months of ownership its needed new brake lines due to corrosion, a new airbag and an absolute pig of an oil leak sorted. Total bills about £3k.
It was however cheap to buy and is an absolute pleasure to drive even as a 15 year old car.

Pah, call that a brave pill? You youngsters don't know what you are on about. Come tell me about the size of your pills when you have had one of these PLUS a BMW 750, a Bentley Turbo R and a TVR Chimaera at the same time,
This was our sensible daily snotter
It was awesome!
Well Mrs Phlap has been running a L322 (a TDV8 3.6 admittedly) for 3 years and 60k miles and it's been fine. No buts and ifs really and just servicing and consumables. Agree with the sentiment to get a decent Indy to look after it. Maybe we are just lucky as I have a decently reliable Chim 500 as well. This was our sensible daily snotter

(Having posted this I now expect both to spontaneously combust by teatime! )

In the last 2 years I’ve driven 56k miles in a 2010 TDV8..... now on 152k miles
Only required regular servicing, tyres and an alternator. Averaged 27.8 mpg.
Don’t believe all the doom mongerers. I wouldn’t run anything else as an everyday car.
Brilliant!!!!!
How the hell do you get 27.8mpg?! I have a '07 TDV8 and can't get it above 22.8!Only required regular servicing, tyres and an alternator. Averaged 27.8 mpg.

Had a 2010 TDV8 for six years bought with 60k and done 60k. Not much gone wrong with it. Paid £32,000 and now probably worth less than £10k. Great value and still fantastic to drive. Keep looking at L405's but can't see much more value in them.Only required regular servicing, tyres and an alternator. Averaged 27.8 mpg.

Chewing through tyres, discs and pads is a misnomer.
My 4.2SC doesn’t chew through any of those things and replacement Genuine parts aren’t that expensive if bought from recognised parts suppliers and reputable dealers.
I find that, although my example has more than LR intended due to a modified supercharger pulley and remap, I drive it rather sedately. Driven with restraint and in recignition that these models don’t do corners terribly well, they can still be hustled along briskly without making much of a fuss.
Their forte is straight-line acceleration..Overtaking, especially. Motorway journeys are almost effortless.
Bumbling about between towns and villages, flicking between speed limits with the twitch of right foot and sat high enough to see past most cars is something I take for granted until driving one of our other cars.
I’ve owned mine since 2013 and it’s just clocked 110,000 miles. Our W210 E55 is faster and my 1971 Mach 1 Mustang far more theatrical, but nothing beats the day-to-day practicality and enjoyment of driving the SC.

I'm currently running a 2007 facelift supercharged. I adore it. There really is nothing quite like wafting around in it on a daily basis. Everybody knows these cars aren't cheap to run. However at the price you pay to buy a good used one and maintain it - there really is nothing comparable in terms of the experience and pleasure driving it gives.
We've done just over 20k in ours in the last three years and spent £6.3k on maintenance. We also run a Porsche 996 C4S which has similar costs and I've had an BMW M cars with similar running costs, so I don't think it's too criminal? Ok you can probably lease something inferior at a similar 'cost', but you won't own it or be able to cash out of it at any stage if you need to.
We get an average of 14mpg but the majority of that is local suburban mileage at rush hour so to be expected. We have done a few runs over to France and from London to Glasgow which is where it really comes into it's own as luxury family wagon - arrive 12hrs later feeling fresh. My biggest bug bear is that it's a magnet for car parking dings due to the sheer size.
Find a good Indy and get them to do an inspection on any prospective purchase. If you're really that paranoid about maintenance, if you buy a post 2009 car you'll still be able to get an independent warranty. Get over to https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/index.php as it's a brilliant ownership resource.
We will buy change to an L405 model at some point, but the way the current one is running, that will be a long way off!
