In the past I'd agree that Mustangs needed a V8 because they were otherwise so crap there was no reason to get one.

Now, the I4 Mustang makes a splendid RWD manual sports coupe that is a far better car than its four cylinder German or Japanese rivals. I'd say its also better in many ways than the ageing 370Z.

Indeed. The old 4.0 and 3.8 based Cologne V6's where always quite far away from the V8's in power and performance. And while "sporty", at least for the 4.0 S197. They weren't what you'd call fast.

The 2011 3.7 Duratec V6 was the big change, jumping from 210hp of the 4.0 to 305hp with the 3.7. This was also a very nice advanced modern engine. And made for a lighter vehicle than the V8 powered GT and with better weight bias.

The optional Performance Package probably makes it one of unsung heros of the recent Mustang lineup and arguably the "drivers" choice.

Had a 2.3 ecoboost Mustang as a hire car is the states last year. After driving it for a week if someone asked me to guess the power I would have said about 180hp. It didn't feel quick at all. Maybe Ford have got a different way of measuring power, as I also drove a 140 ecoboost fiesta the other day and that was as flat as a pancake as well.

Must be you or it was broken (suspect the former hehe ). I too hired one in FL, did just under 1900 miles in it. It felt pretty nippy to me and was nice for over taking on the freeway or getting away from the lights. It didn't feel as quick as my LS1 Camaro z28, but certainly wasn't what I'd call slow.

I haven't really had a massive chance to exploit it yet, but will be this coming weekend biggrin

After years of muscle I just bought a Mini JCW for the handling fun. It’s great. Everyone slags off yank tanks but my z06 was a 500bhp go kart.

Love that colour it’s like another classic I own, I fancied a mustang in gulf blue

My previous previous car was an F57 JCW, have had four new MINI's over the years, and still have a classic Mini - so kind of vice versa...

Got the classic in storage:aD

I find the mini feels like it has a little bit of rear rotation in the corners, not the typical balance from rwd. Love it

Depends what you are used to, we have an Ecoboost Fiesta with 140 bhp and even after a 370 bhp BMW it still feels like moves pretty well, drive a non turbo variant then see if it still feels flat as a pancake.

I've not driven the Mustang, but the Fiesta 140 is a slug, agreed and way slower than it should be and way slower than a less powerful Mini Cooper. No idea where the power goes, certainly not to the wheels.

I don't really see the Mustang as a competitor to an MX5 or GT86, both cars I am considering . It is miles bigger and a totally different experience, despite the odd spec being similar. There's nothing else really like it in the UK at least. If it's for you, great.

It's not him - I thought the same about the ecoboom I had last year. Though in fairness that may have been the 10sp I hated

180hp in a car that size would make it 10-12 sec to 60mph and slow to pick up at motorway speed. And I don't think you are really saying it felt like that.

I am very happy with my 2018 Mustang EcoBoost. This performance 2.3L looks like a good option in the range.

180bhp in a 420i or 520i being closer in size / weight is more like 7.x seconds to sixty and 145mph. I guess that's the point being madesmile

That was kind of my experience in 2001 when I first moved to the US. I had a job in Florida and had to rent a mustang. The gave me a V6 in metallic blue that looked a lot like the moonraker blue that the BMW's used in the 90's. The car looked incredibly beautiful from the outside but very dull and uncomfortable on the inside. The 3.8l V6 had 190HP but i'd swear it had less poke than the BMW E30 318i that I drove in England before I moved to the states. After that experience, I went back to buying European cars.

I understand that the newer cars are better by an order of magnitude and the represent great value. I have no idea what they sell for in the UK but if it's anywhere close to a BMW or Mercedes. You're going to want a BMW or Mercedes. If you disagree, ask yourself when you last saw a Ford Probe or Ford Cougar on the road.

I'm on my second Mustang now (both manual V8's), and I would never consider an MX-5, GT86 or anything else like that.

The only direct rival would be a fast BMW 4-series, Audi S5, or similar. But they are in comparison fairly bland products, well built and well sorted yes, but bland when compared with:

Stunning! thumbup

I had countless Fords over the years (MK2 Cortina, Mk2 Granada 2.8 Ghia, Mk2 Escort RS2000, a couple of Capri 2.8is, Granada Scorpio, Mk2 Granada 2.0L, Sierra Sapphire 2.0GLSi), but I gave up on them when they all went FWD.

And now they are finally making a car I would really love to own - it's probably just a matter of time! laugh

Respect to Ford for going with 2.3L badges, rather than the German habit of delinking badging from capacity for marketing reasons
