If you own a Lotus and Caterham and you’re comparing an R8 or Maserati to them in terms of purity of driving experience then yes, they are crap but that somewhat misses the point.

If you get into a Granturismo and expect a supercar drive and are disappointed then that’s your fault not the cars

Lotuses and Caterham are fantastic track cars or if you live in the sticks but they become extremely wearying on even moderate length journeys and to be honest if you’re going to solve that with an additional GT car in the fleet, I’d rather a Maserati Granturismo than an E36 328i if you don’t mind me saying so!

This is why the R8 would fail as a track car and as a truly challenging drivers car requiring skill and input to extract max performance. Inert steering over servoed brakes overweight body which would kill the brakes and tyres in a few laps.

Think in a similar vein the Maseratic Mc Stradale. Yes a car full of character sounds good good pedigree etc etc but essentially outmoded overweight mediocre performance and a rather diluted driving experience and similar to the R8 requiring little driver skill to extract the best from the car.

Not everyone is interested in going round a track, some of us like to be seen in a nice car and preferably quite rare which narrows it down a bit these days, more wealth has resulted in a plethora of Astons and Porsches and to a lesser extent Ferraris which were a rare sight once but have now lost the wow factor due to their increasing numbers on the road, here in the South-East the roads are chocker, speed camera vans always seem to conveniently positioned, a clapped out VW Golf would probably be more than adequate for the road conditions.
You say you like to be 'seen' in a nice car. Sounds like this somewhat shallow requirement is more important to you than the driving experience itself.

From my perspective an interesting driver focused car has to pass this test as firstly a road car and then maybe as an occasional track car.

Yep there has been an increase in the number of cars you mention but certain models are still rare. Not a supercar but I have a 981 Spyder in my fleet which is a great package at the money and only 223 cars in the UK.

The South East is not an area I would choose to live or drive.

Try the north I.e. Yorkshire Lancashire Cheshire and parts of Wales for brilliant largely unrestricted driving roads.

We all like different things and have different expectations. But you are talking to a man who drove an Elise on Friday for 15 hours, only stopping for a combined total of 2.5 hours. Perfectly comfortable and a bloody good GT car (though the radio is a bit crap)...;)

People want all sorts of junk in cars that I personally don't but appreciate that's just me.

And who wants a Maser when you could have a Bentley etc...?

London is obviously not full of exotica because people like driving them and presumably this where most of them are sold so perhaps not all that surprising they're getting ever less interesting to drive. Then you have the Autobahn fast lane where it's all about high speed stability and showing off the top speed which also makes cars less interesting to drive.

Then there's thankfully places like Wales where some actual driving can get done.

Agreed at least for driving the roads in the SE are absolutely dire, which is where most the nice cars are of course

Plenty of decent roads in the SE if you know where to go. However I do the occasional thrash through Wales/Yorkshire if I have a spare day or 2 free.

I see where we’re going wrong here if you think the Elise is a GT car

I like a performance car with comfortable seats and a bearable environment in which you can listen to music or talk to your passenger

You might be comfortable doing 15 hours in an Elise but you are very much in a minority!

What’s a sports car to you if an Elise is a GT. A unicycle!?

The Evora is fine as a GT, seats are very comfy, it’s got cruise, heated seats, satnav, Bluetooth, luggage space but it can out corner most GT’s and has telepathic steering.

You have to generally know where to go and make the effort rather than going somewhere you want and enjoying the journey

I found one yesterday by accident, come off the M25 onto the A41 heading for Aylesbury.

Anyone would think it was a car enthusiast’s forum. Odd that people like their own cars!

I was bring obtuse with the "GT" comment but only to prove we all have different needs. I find the Lotus perfect ably bearable and with headphones, I can easily listen to music over the noise of the straight cut 'box. And with upgraded seats and harnesses, no back ache whatsoever.

What you find a good GT car would probably send me to sleep but that's the joy of cars.

Back on topic, definitely the 911 for me as I find the R8 pretty dull. However I would probably go GT3 or a heavily modded 996 or 997 if I needed rear seats.

Honestly it isn't a very good car if it's going to permanently damage your hearing, what a stupid price to pay to enjoy driving a vehicle!
