I agree with the observation about the Carrera S being a GT car now...haven’t driven a 992 but have driven a 991.2....when you push it it turns into a sports car but feels very GT when you aren’t “on it” makes it a great daily driver I am sure.

When does yours arrive ?

Truth is Porsche do make really good cars and, borderline dubious practices and all, they do a bleeding good job of selling and marketing them too, that's a pretty potent cocktail.

I'm a fan of 911s of all shapes and sizes but as the ranges expand so the extremities look more interesting than the mainstream choices in the middle - for example T and GT3/RS were to me the most interesting of the 991s. The said everything else in between was exceptionally competent and likely to have made for very satisfied owners.

I wouldn't buy a 992 currently for the sole reason that as competent as the current models are there are going to be more engaging versions arriving in the near future. For that reason out of these particular two I'd probably go with the Audi for the engine and sense of occasion alone.

The two ugliest sport cars ever made.

Unsurprisingly, those who like one often like the other. Its just the way some are programmed. A bit like men who like other men.

Porsche was ok until the R8 came along, wow so much more presence.

Only interesting Porsches have a GT3 or RS badge!

Every day use ? Of course, the Porsche wins its more Merc like. Boring.

Funny to see a 4X4 manufacturer making a sports car. I expect some will like it though, even if it is expensive.

Having owned the previous gen R8, I'd go 911 this time. Only not the new 992 ..... yet

I'm more inclined to get a 991 GTS, then wait a good few years till the 992 GTS get's onto the second hand market.
991.2 turbo 6 over a v10 nasp?
Love Porsche’s have owned 4 but I’m enjoying the extra cylinders before Jeremy Corbyn takes them off me and makes me ride a wooden bike or something

I am happy with my old MK1 V10+. Audi have leant me several of the new ones and when at 120K it was not compelling in the slightest. At 80K for a V10+ then yes, that is compelling and I don't agree with the inferences of RWS being 'by far' the best new R8. A V10+ without active dampers and steering is probably the right combination, but try and find one.

Far more road presence than my old 996 GT3, much quicker A to B due to being more planted and less camber sensitive too, but not as good in some important areas such as steering, but little is compared to a 996 GT3. It gets massive respect on the road and usually the most vocal criticisms come from those sorts who when you click on their car history it's full of 10K to 20K heaps. Sounds snobby I know, but it's does seem to be the case. They get angry at the perception they have of the Audi driver and what they think it makes them think they are. All very odd.

For 80K a Mk2 V10+ or RWS is matched in value only by a 12C.

Just get the feeling your conclusion is a little conforming to stereotype. Universally the R8 has been credited with being the best supercar to live with and use everyday but add to this your affirmation that the R8 is the most exciting of the two on a cross country blast, surely it should have informed your final choice. So I'm puzzled by the reason for choosing the somewhat anonymous 911, it does appear a bit me too and lame. The RWS will no doubt become a classic due to its relative rarity. You suggest the Porsche has to be pushed to its limits to get the excitement factor from it, to me you are describing a 911 that is inferior to the RWS in every area. Last weekend I was out having Sunday lunch in a very affluent market town in South Wales. There were 4 Porsches parked prominently in the space of 100 metres yet the head turner and I mean everyone, watched as an immaculate Gen 1 R8 burbled slowly up the street stopped outside a local store with a cash point. An unassuming guy, classily unaware that his beautiful ride was getting so much attention, got his cash, re fired the V8 and burbled slowly away out of town. You could hear the universal sighs of approval. R8 all R8's seem to get more admiring glances than Porsche's it's not the only reason I'd choose the R8 but I must admit its on the list. So R8 RWS for me hands down and that's not me being brave

I like the fact there are so many 911s around that you could be in. 30k one or a 150k one and non car people won’t think much diff or give a second glance (some of the GT models excluded) , sure there are many on here who appreciate lambos, Ferrari’s etf but personally choose to drive something less shouty .

You can buy a brand new 12C or 570S for £100K? I'm not sure that's right.

Is a £100k 12C not a supercar as it isn't brand new? I'm not sure that's right

The 911 is super boring, the turbo s might be okay though

If you’re not using the small rear seats then it’s hard to look past mclaren - and before people whine about new vs used blah blah, who cares - you can get an ultra low mileage one for the same price so it’s extreme comparable

Drive a 911 and tell me they aren't brilliant.

I've had loads of cars. Just taken delivery of a 992. It's awesome.

The typical anti Porsche bunch who typically have never owned or driven one....

Merely highlighting the futility of comparing new prices with used. It's a trap some seem to fall into without even realising that their apples are, in fact, oranges.

As it happens, I don't believe there is a price point at which a car can be classified as a supercar. That classification is almost infinitely variable, absolutely subjective and utterly intangible.
But in this particular case a base spec 911 can never be considered a supercar no matter the performance statistics nor the RRP - and I'll take some convincing about the bells and whistles whizzy ones.

Nicely presented informative video, keep these coming please. Shows up the you-tubers for the crap they present.

R8 for me as a 2nd car, 992 would have to be my choice though if an only car though. People seldom realise how important those 2 extra seats are in justifying the purchase of a 911 over many of its competitors.

I would be surprised if many new 992 owners are buying the car as a main car , at the price it’s usually a 3rd , 4th or higher car for the household

Those seat still are often v useful agree for many

Funnily enough I’d say that the Turbo S is one of the more boring 911s.

The real fun is at the edges of the range too and bottom.

The most all round competency and practicality in the middle.
