I have an 8p it has an AMD map and exhaust. What’s good: respectable (used to own an Impreza) stylish looks like a mini rs4 IMO, nice interior agree on stupid armrest gets in the way. Easy to drive at a moderate pace smoothly, semi ok mpg. Bad: boring, boring sounding engine, light steering, seems a little understeery when pushed. Fairly fast (100 ~high 11ish with a map) but you will never get up on Sunday to drive it. The newer gen 8l? Sounds considerably better (but too many stolen)

I had an 8V one and really loved it, probably because it was my first relatively fast car and I did really enjoy it but I’ve got to agree with a lot of opinions on here a relatively dull car to drive but really capable none the less.

Nicely built though and bulletproof really, never had an issue in 75,000 miles and 3 years of ownership.

Always liked the look of these however they had a reputation of being owned by people who like to sell illegal substances as a career choice which still puts me off even though said people have since moved on to other cars (or prison).

I had one of these an early 99 T plate in red with cloth seats and no ESP kept it for 2.5 years, I had it remapped by Oettinger (RSD) to about 255 bhp proper little rocket, I always wondered what happened to T134 LEC after I sold it.

I'm amazed how quick the Escort Cosworth was there comparatively.

Not sure how I feel about the strange grill on this example but I like the S3. I have a real soft spot for the 8L, kinda modern classic era now, my brother had one for a while but it was a dog.

My mate had an 8V, pretty impressive all round car, especially with a map on it, very very capable car.

I can never remember if these 8P suffer with the oil pump issues like the other TFSI models of that era but they're nice cars none the less.

Quote ---> Audi was there in 2006

And Subaru were there 10 years earlier! biggrin
Missing the “premium” tag from the headline though, FWIW
And 'Hot Hatch' - Kinda key that...
OK, so it's the Integrale 16v 16 years earlier then.

Not so much the oil pump, but I understand that any VAG turbo engine of the decade should have the sump dropped, and cleaned including the pick up. The oil dipstick guide still loves to break up. And oil does gunge if the correct spec of oil is not used or changed every 10k. I changed the oil and filter on mine last week with the correct Quantum oil. Next week I’m going to drop the sump and change the pick up and dip stick guide with fresh oil and filter. I will then know it’s as it needs to be. And will be changed every 5k after.

I had the 225bhp Mk1 S3 which was heavy but a great point to point car. The brakes did glow after a spirited drive.

I drove the 1st Mk2 S3 that arrived st Audi Hatfield, but it didn't look as good and was a little dull to drive. The B7 RS4 Avant was much more fun.

The styling on the Mk3 is better if a little grown up and the Mk7 GTI/R look sharper.

What's also amazing is how the 6 RS Sprint decimated the field over such a short distance!

Not surprising though

I went in J1 WRC ( I think that was the press car as seen in Autocar) at a manufacturer test day at Millbrook back in the late 90s. Simply astonishing

The demo guy driving it raced historic F1 cars and he said he was constantly amazed at it

Good plan, the Haldex pump filter thing enjoys a bit of TLC too once in a while I think.

It may well have been Adam

I was at a SMMT day - you could drive cars as well but only passenger rides in the EVO

I think maybe this was around summer 99

Was really considering one of these, but for the budget we had DSG's rarely came into the mix. Even when there was some, they often had bad missing basic things like electric full leather seats - they are ultimately Golfs after all. For the same price, age and mileage, it made much more sense to us to get the A6 with the 3.0T supercharged, as it was marginally slower but still very fast, alongside being highly specced due to many demonstrators floating about. Things like full Valcona leather, advanced MMI, AMI, DIS and more, it made much more sense. MPG tradeoff was marginal too. They also had a proper Torsen quattro system with the 60/40 split, and it ultimately made for a nice drive and an A6 that really is quite rapid.

Saying this, thermostat went pop, as is standard for the supercharged V6, but it wasn't a crazy thing to be fixed. I do remember seeing a 2009 S3 spewing white smoke out as it was being recovered, hope it was a one off but maybe we chose the better car. Maybe.

Sounds a bit like a turbo failure maybe on that S3?

I think so. When I say spewing it really was covering the dual carriageway with smoke, looked like a nuclear power plant. Crazy stuff. Turbo is a possibility but also the fact that this is a 2.0TFSI engine, which I believed had issues with piston rings as well and oil burn (another reason why the V6 seemed better).

It looks very attractive in the metal, as well as on paper but sadly, the facelift 8P is the most disappointing car I've ever driven. It's almost as if Audi's engineers deliberately set-out to ruin each aspect of driving and / or tailor the car for the over-confident and ham-fisted. The steering is devoid of feel, the brakes are over-assisted (and if you left foot brake because the electronic nanny cuts the throttle), the engine is characterless and the chassis is completely one-dimensional. Most decent FWD hatches are more playful.

Sadly, it seems that this is what sells today and BMW seems intent on destroying the 1-Series by copying this approach with the next generation. frown

The issue is finding a decent unmodified example. Even in the PH sales, look at how many have terrible cosmetic mods. Never mind what’s been done, or not been done mechanically.

I paid 8k for a (decent) dealer supplied 3dr late 07 model. But it’s had two lady owners, not modified, and the clutch is fine! It’s straight but it needs a bit of paint due to laquer peel. But outside of regular maintenance, any car of this age is going to need a major suspension refresh. There are so many bushes in the back! The below was my list of stuff that just needed doing. Cam belt is due next year!

- [ ] Recirc valve rev G
- [x] Cam follower
- [ ] PCV valve
- [ ] Spark plugs
- [x] Air filter
- [x] Fuel filter
- [x] Cabin filter
- [ ] Engine oil and filter and pick up pipe
- [ ] Dipstick
- [ ] Gearbox oil
- [x] Haldex oil and filter
- [ ] Diff oil
- [x] Gearbox linkages
- [ ] Gearbox dog bone inset
