Hello All,
On the lookout for a stopgap shed to replace our recently written off C-Max.

I would like a manual V70 D5 and this one has popped up locally (hour or so away).

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volvo/volvo-v70-d5-leath...

It's leggy as you would expect for the low price but has 11months MOT and the DVLA history suggests a few things were fixed to get it through.

What particular should I look out for. I recall the sweet spot on these was post 2003 silver dials, manual and pre dpf (euro3?) which I think this is.

Any clues appreciated.

Yes, that's the sweet spot model... 163bhp Euro 3 so no DPF or swirl flaps but in the improved facelift body and a manual box.

Had two of these and they're brilliant... but they do eat front suspension parts, tyres and are hard on the brakes so usual checks there.

Alternator freewheel pulleys can seize, they're chirp away and make the idle rough and worst case can throw the belt into the cambelt. They're inexpensive to replace.

Check for a notchy or vague steering feel, could be the pump or rack failing. They should have green fluid, most owners top up with red which kills the seals.

Gearboxes and drivetrain are generally solid but check for a heavy or slow clutch, listen for rattles at idle whilst operating the clutch.

Oil leaks are common but they are known for the core plug on the NS of the block to fail, leaks oil in snd around the gearbox do check carefully as that's dear.

Bar that, intercoolers can swell and leak so listen for boost leaks, check for poor idle and black smoke and ditto the engine mounts which are vacuum operated... remove the oil cap at idle and listen for a popping noise.

Then it's the usual stuff, make sure the electrics all work, no dash lights, funny smells and no rusty rear arches, wings or around the top mounts.

But at £900 it's cheap regardless of miles snd had it not been several hundred miles away, I'd be into it by now.

I've got a 185bhp auto that replaced my 163bhp manual... the latter was the better car and much better on fuel too.
