Not sure if this had ever been discussed on here before (and I'll be amazed if it hasn't) but I was in the NCP carpark at Covent Garden yesterday and spotted two cars that look like they've been abandoned in there for quite some time. Firstly there's an E34 530i F247 TLX that's covered in dust but even more strangely there's an old Rolls Royce TGC 536L that's caked in dust and had a tax disc showing expiry in November 2011.

I would've thought that if no payment was being made to keep them there, NCP would have had them recovered. Then again I guess the owners could always show up and pay the astronomical bill...

Anyone able to shed any light on the mystery of these relics?

The BMW is MOT’d.

The Rolls Royce was MOT’d until September last year.

I would have thought if it’s still MOTD it’s owned by someone living near by most likely a old boy who doesn’t use it much, but just pays to park it there

Funny enough, in Cardiff there’s 3 Jaguar XJs from the early 2000s all Parked in a NCP and covered in dust

Yep, as above, neither are "abandoned" as such.

BMW is MOT'd until the end of August '19 & Taxed until the start of October '19.
RR is currently declared SORN but it's not on a public road so still legal.

I imagine both owners pay to park there - i'd assume it wouldn't be cheap to park there for however long they've been there, but being Central London the owners can probably afford it.

Not sure if it works in London, but if you park for longer than a day in the NCP car parks in Manchester and are unfortunate enough to “lose your ticket”, they only charge you for one day’s parking...

Not sure how that would work given the ANPR setup in NCP car parks used for the Park Pass Card.

I’d imagine they either have a flat or office that came with use of the space or similar setup

On a similar note there has been a bubble shaped Nissan micra in the multi-storey car park in ocean village, Southampton for the last 5 years or so, each time I go past the tyres look a bit worse, more dust etc

In this case I guess the paper work to move it must be more effort than it’s worth

This. I imagine if they have ANPR then the lost ticket wont work.

But it certainly does work on other car parks, I recently parked for a week and genuinely lost my ticket, they charged a fixed lost ticket fee which equated to 3 days normal parking. I guess they win some and lose some given that most people are probably only parking for a day but being made to pay for three days!

Dread to think of a season ticket cost in the centre of London....

When they demolished a car park in Nottingham for redevelopment of the area, there were apparently 3 abandoned cars that they couldn't trace owners for.

How does this happen? Surely the V5 is in somebody's name?

If you have a micra worth £200 and it dies in the car park, mot is coming up etc

You can simply fill out the v5 saying you sold it yesterday to mr Smith, 5 lets be avenue, crap town

Then there is no one responsible

I don't imagie they tried too hard. Probably sent a letter to the address DVLA held then disposed of them if no reply. If they were owned by most Phers, then the letter wouldn't even have arrived.

Thanks for the replies. Although I guess most of us would find it utterly ridiculous to just leave a car gathering dust like that, the owners of these vehicles may have plenty of others to use as and when they like. The spaces coming with use of a flat or office kind of makes sense, certainly in the case of the BMW which was in a "premium" space.

No ANPR in the ones in Manchester yet. Still work on the basis of a barcoded ticket which you obtain on entry and validate with payment upon exit. If you lose your ticket, you speak to someone at the pay machines and they’ll make it spit out a fresh ticket for a 24 hour charge.

I’ve got an NCP resident’s season pass. Roughly £1100 a year. Not too bad value given that I can park in the majority of the NCPs in Manchester.

Apparently there are a few grandad contracts knocking around in new city centre car parks.
If building a multi story involves knocking down some resident garages blocks, deals have been done so that the owners of certain properties get a free / cheap season ticket in the new car park.
My mate has one in a multi-storey in Leeds. £10/yr admin fee for an allocated space near his house. It’s time limited though, think it was 10 years from when the previous property owner did the deal.

Apart from this, the Rolls-Royce doesn't need an MOT or tax, does it? I guess you'd still have to apply for them but just not pay/present it
