Am i right in thinking if i was to import from Germany a 2016 car there are no taxes or anything beyond uk car tax and mot to pay?

What if the said car had only 1000kms on the clock. Thank you.

Yes assuming the first owner paid the VAT on the car and wasn't a business that claimed it back. If the previous owner has done this you would be liable for the 20% VAT in addition to the cost of the car on its arrival in the UK.

Thanks. i,m a little worried by point 3.

VAT has already been paid in any EU country including the UK
the vehicle has been in use for more than 6 months
the vehicle has done more that 6,000km (about 3,728 miles)

You will have to pay VAT if it has less than 6000 Kms,

No, my son got hit for VAT on a secondhand motorcycle even though it was over a year old, it had 1100 miles.

wonder how people do it who buy a low mileage F40 or some such car.

I guess you will then have to buy one that was not (ever) privately owned, so you can pay the ex VAT price/recover the VAT

Buy the car and exceed the 6,000km before bringing it back to the UK....

Great excuse for an epic road trip getting to know the car! And save yourself 20% VAT charge....

Is it that easy or do the customs/VAT guys require the purchase paperwork upon import/U.K. registration which would presumably show the mileage when the vehicle was sold to you ? I have no experience of this but do have an interest in a definitive answer from somebody who has gone through the process.

lsb, i was thinking the same. mileage might be stated on the bill of sale.

A car i have seen only has 1000kms on it so not sure i could drive it for 5000km before bringing it into the uk. Hmm.

The mileage is that at the time of import , not sale.

So how do you prove what the mileage is as i come off the train ? I could say the car has 6000kms on it .

are you definitely buying a car that was owned by a private individual and not leased/financed/company owned? Probably easiest to just avoid the few cars where that is the case if buying low mileage

On cars i have imported previously, nobby has ever looked at the car its all been sent paperwork. At the point of arrival, no one knows its going to be imported as it's not declared at arrival.
