Are the Porsche 4-pot 718 models selling then?
Discussion
A lot of PH bemoaned the move away from a flat-six. Porsche obviously though the new car buying target market would be fine with a 4-pot turbo.
Just interested really to see what the score is now they've been on sale for a while.
Any data coming through or sales people that know what the score is?

The sound is the least of the problems for me. The torque curve is a horrible shape for a sports car and whilst it's decent for a turbo, the throttle response is some way short of the of naturally aspirated unit it replaces.
Give me an EV over a blown four any day... but I don't think it'll hurt sales significantly and indeed I could easily believe the better numbers posted have a greater positive effect on sales than any negative effect from the change in engine character.

They are quick, but have to agree the sound they make is not very nice, Surprising since many earlier Porsches were big four bangers as well but they seemed to make a much nicer sound when pushed..
Saw one accelerating down the road, with its driver giving it the beans, and it sounded rough enough for me to think that the driver should just have gone down the road at a more `normal' rate, on the basis of the old saying that it is better to keep ones mouth shut, and keep people guessing, than to open ones mouth, and confirm a person is an idiot.
Still wouldn't say no one though, but for me at least the six sounds just so much better.

I thought going to the 4 pot turbo was part of the measures of bringing emissions down across the Porsche range. Hence them losing diesels. Than again I heard that economy wise the 4 pot wasn't that much better than the 6.
I did enjoy the test drive of a 718S but lordy the sports exhaust would be the 1st thing I'd omit. Fabulous handling car but the engine really doesn't belong in something that expensive! GTS with decent options has to be knocking on 70K?

They sell because we live in a world where a lot of people don't give a sxxx about what they buy. See how many unnecessary diesel suvs are on the road.
I mean, I do the same with a fridge, oven or hoover. I don't really know about so I don't really care.
But it is obvious that a real Porsche fan is not going to target one of those 4-pots.

Is a real Porsche fan a buyer that will only do one or all of the following:
Buy a 993 at monstrous cost in the name of keeping it real as "Air cooled or go home"
Weep daily at the constant dilution of the once great brand
Key any Cayenne or Panamera he happens apon. (He couldn't bring himself to go near anything as low rent as a Boxster or Cayman for fear of catching something)
I know the 718 was a downsizing too far for many (myself included) but Porsche do have some good form with 4 pots!
This post was meant as light hearted jesting and in no way meant to offend any 993 owners. (that I'd be envious of anyway)

Whoa there. You can't just wander in here with your actual research and facts. You need to be saying something like this: "I didn't see a 718 on the way to work this morning which proves that they're not selling any. Porsche will rue the day they turned their back on their die-hard fans and diluted the brand in this way. Mark my words they will be bankrupt within a year. And never mind that I've been saying this since they introduced the Cayenne 17 years ago which turned out to be a massive success, this time it will definitely happen. Any day now."

Thanks for posting this - very interesting. The consistency is what surprises me, not just with the 718, but also with the 991. EdJ said:
