That's Cupra Ateca money, which has an extra 70hp and is hardly spartan inside. Seems a bit daft price point, as I suspect people wanting a decent pace SUV will go for an Ateca instead.

It'll still sell in its millions though.
no one cares, they want the VW badge!
Who wants a "Cupra" badge though?

You're right. Pack all the kids and suitcases into an Evora. Cramped yes, but just think of the ride quality and feedback through the steering wheel?
Or you could alternatively buy a new Golf R estate and save yourself £6k on list price in the process?

That front end is both inelegant and bland. When I see this model approaching - they're always in white - I just think what a shame you let the outside world see you in that.

It might have an impressive 0-60 time but that's only down to AWD and DSG, with only 135 BHP/Ton and the aerodynamics of a shed I can't image it's real world performance is going to impress... Kinda devaluing the R moniker.

Like them or hate them, but the Tiguan is one of the best looking SUV's you can buy.

Is it buggery, it's just another meh looking SUV. There's nothing about the styling to distinguish it from any other blandmobile or set any true petrolhead's testicles revolving.

The front is just fine. The rear needs some help. Base models might be bland, the R line isn't. 800k sold annually, VW got it wrong smile

Well it's not an R though so chill biggrin. It's no more an R than an AMG Sport is an AMG or an M sport is an M.

IMO in R Line trim is one of the best looking SUVs around.

Meh, would rather have a fast estate with better handling and all the practicality. Plenty of fun wagons new or used that £38k would secure.

i thinks its side profile looks hideously stubby.

thankfully its why everyone has different opinions. 1.7 tons

yes agreed the power to weight ratio is no better than say a suzuki swift turbo 1.4 LOL.

A VW badge is hardly special though.

I don’t disagree, but I’m sure after a while I’d get sick to death of explaining to people that it isn’t a Seat, and that Cupra is a brand in it’s own right.

Me too, although I’m biased. To answer the OP, my 2.0 petrol DSG goes like st off a stick compared to my previous petrol CRV hehe

Is 230bhp in a golf really only "adequate" in a family hatch?
In a Golf 7 it's IMVHO much more than that. The car is barely heavier than super mini hatches and these engines usually have pretty healthy ponies. Biased as I have a GTI (with the diff and 15 PS more). It's convincingly quick, even on the Autobahn.

In the Tig, which is substantially heavier and has a lot more drag (cd, frontal area, ride height, all courtesy of SUVness), it's perhaps on the lower end of adequate. Especially as the thing will be even more removed from any sensations than the Golf. So it's not going to be fast and will feel even less so.

Tbh I don't know why PH bother to review these things. Absolutely nothing special.

I had a manual MK7.5 Golf GTI with the exact same engine for a few weeks and I think this will be more than quick enough, the Golf was very torquey, almost diesel like with 270lbft, a very good engine, it should suit the Tiguan well. My mother’s Hybrid RAV4 has 200 bhp, less torque than an electric toothbrush but makes decent progress (even if the engine is screaming and begging you to stop).

This won’t be a quick car by petrolhead standards but it’s DEFINITELY not a slow car. I’ll tell you what it will be though, thirsty, I suspect mid 20’s MPG. Cars like these make more sense in the Middle East/states where petrol is cheap, at 1.35 a litre, you’re better off buying a diesel!

I'm struggling with the concept of the Ateca being smaller, when they're built on the same platform??
